Chapter Four: Forth Floor: Nachos, Ice, and Twisted Physics

<Capn_Ascii> "As we join our heroes, we find them having just cleared the first of the tower's major checkpoints. Their prize: A BRAND NEW CAAAAR!, actually, a brand new shiny platinum key. Oh, and also a cleric."

<Lak> "Okay, plop that key in, and let's go up."

<Drem> "Is it too late to get the car?"

<Zephi> "I hope not."

<Capn_Ascii> Having been freed from her contrived death-trap fate, Beri excuses herself and heads back down to the lobby to recover from her ordeal. And also to score some nachos.

<Zephi> "Bring us back some."

<Drem> "Everyone ready for the next section?"

<Lak> "Yep."

Zephi nods.

Drem walks over to the appropriate keyhole and inserts the platinum key

<Capn_Ascii> *SHING!*

<Capn_Ascii> As the key slides into the lock, a powerful burst of light shines forth, dazzling you all. It seems to get brighter and brighter, disappears.

<Capn_Ascii> The lock poofs out of existence, and the elevator door glides open.

Zephi gets in.

Lak follows

Drem tags along

<Capn_Ascii> The inside of this elevator looks a lot like the ones you've been riding around in until now - it has all the same features, including muzak (thankfully, a different tune this time). The one difference you can see is the control panel - the buttons on this one include a single "20" off by itself (where you are now), and then run from 31-60.

<Lak> "Okay, this is poor design. Why not just make this level on level 30 if you must do it like this? I was thinking all the levels from 21 to 30 would be double access. Lame."

Zephi shrugs. "Oh well. 50 then?"

<Lak> "I'm guessing level 50 will be the enxt set of keys, yeah."

<Lak> next*

Zephi hits 50

<Capn_Ascii> *whrrrr*

<Capn_Ascii> *DING!*

<Capn_Ascii> *swish*

<Capn_Ascii> The doors open.

Zephi peeks outside

Lak does too

Drem also takes a look

<Capn_Ascii> You take a look outside, and find yourselves looking at a room very much like the one you just left. Exactly like it, in fact...the layout is exactly the same. A single, big, empty room, with elevator shafts surrounding it on all four sides.

Lak carefully makes his way towards the western elevator

<Capn_Ascii> It's an elevator, alright. And it's...puce. Ugh.

Lak sighs and cuts across to the east elevator

<Lak> (after checking the key requirement)

<Capn_Ascii> Ah, purple...much more tolerable. You can actually stand the sight of this one long enough to check the locks:

<Capn_Ascii> 2 gold,

<Capn_Ascii> 2 silver,

<Capn_Ascii> and 2 bronze.

<Lak> "2 of each," Lak announces. "5 levels to do, assuming we use the silver key we have left."

Lak heads back to the elevator. "Okay, so pick a number... start at... 35, I guess?"

<Zephi> "Okay."

<Drem> "As good a place as any."

Zephi hits the button for 35.

Lak nods and pushes the "35" key... somewhat redundantly.

<Lak> "Oops. Sorry."

Drem leans back and lets everyone else do the button pushing

<Zephi> "They say the more times you press it, the faster you go."

<Capn_Ascii> The doors close, the car moves, and you end up waiting nearly 5 minutes before you finally arrive at your destination. Wow, that sucked.

<Lak> "At least Pink Floyd doesn't suck as much as the screeching sounds of the red elevator."

Zephi peeks out

<Capn_Ascii> The doors seem to take forever to open...and when they do, you're almost immediately hit by a blast of sheer cold. It's freezing in here!

<Capn_Ascii> The room looks much like some of the others you've seen, except that instead of earth tones, the room is cast in frosty blues. Fitting, seeing as how the entire room is freezing cold - it's like being in a giant icebox.

<Lak> "Let's bundle up," Lak comments, going into his backpack and putting on a blanket

Zephi sees Drem shiver and hands him her cold weather outfit. "Hope it fits."

Drem puts on the wool coat like a trenchcoat. "Hold on to the rest. I think this'll be enough."

Zephi nods, putting on the scarf and putting the rest in her bag.

Lak examines the pattern on the floor, wondering what it means

<Capn_Ascii> Most of the floor in this room is missing - aside from small platforms at each compass point, the only solid surfaces are a series of narrow raised walkways that twist and meander through the open pit in front of you. The paths are made of stone, but they all look like they're covered in sheets of ice, thanks to the cold.

<Capn_Ascii> The pit itself seems to go down out of sight, despite the fact that the floor below ought to be clearly visible. Hmm.

<Capn_Ascii> And as if to give you an even bigger middle finger as icing on the frozen cake, there are *two* chests here, on either side of the room.

<Lak> "Plan?"

Zephi pulls a few pitons out of her bag "I think we can use these like Ice-picks to make it across. But I don't have enough for all of us."

<Drem> "I could teleport us."

<Lak> "I'm not a good movement skater. Whenever we played hockey, I was the goalie."

<Zephi> "I didn't mean skating... You've never seen someone climb a mountain? they use poles and they push them into the ground so they don't slip and fall back down the mountain.

<Lak> "This is horizontal, Zephi."

<Lak> "That would take forever."

<Drem> "Or we could teleport."

<Zephi> "Same prinicple. It still keeps you from slipping. But I think teleporting would be easier in this case."

<Lak> "Yeah, I think the teleport would be ideal."

<Lak> "If you can do it enough times, let's go for it."

<Drem> "Where should we go first?"

<Lak> "It doesn't matter. Pick one."

<Drem> "Take my hands. We're going to the left chest first."

Zephi takes.

Lak takes the other hand

<Lak> "Wait, first."

Lak pulls out a wand

<Lak> "Detecto!"

<Drem> "Oh, yeah. Good idea."

Lak waits for results

<Capn_Ascii> The wand lights up, and as it does, you can feel your eyes being bombarded by eldritch energies! ...well, kinda sorta. Actually, it looks like the only things magical in here are the chests themselves (they're both lit up), and a single tile of pathway in the center of the elevated maze...

<Drem> "Anything that could kill the teleport?"

<Lak> "Alright, I don't see any anti-teleport here. Just a couple of squares are lit. The chests and one in the middle. Teleport us one square away from the chest. Right next to it, not on top though."

Drem closes his eyes and concentrates on the chest. Soon, the world begins spinning around the group, until it's a blur. Then it suddenly stops, leaving them in front of the chest on the left side of the room.

Lak nods approvingly and carefully attempts to open the chest, keeping his eyes open for the magical trap

<Capn_Ascii> Lak: You slowly, carefully bend down to open the chest...and then quickly, painfully eat a faceful of ice as you lose your footing and smash face-first onto the platform. But that's not the worst of it...your momentum causes you to slip right off the edge, and into the blackness below!

<Capn_Ascii> Lak can be heard yelling with surprise as he disappears from sight, his scream fading away. After a moment, though, it starts to fade back in - and suddenly, Lak falls down from the ceiling near the elevator and painfully lands on the non-icy platform there.

Zephi stares.

Lak tries to get up sheepishly. "Uh, I'll just wait for you guys here, why don't I?"

<Drem> "Zephi, do you have a rope or something?"

<Zephi> "Not one that's not attached to my grasping hook. Why?"

<Drem> "To see if we could pull"

<Zephi> "Uhh.. I'm not sure that would work for objects. and I'm not willing to try."

Zephi thinks for a minute. "If I use the grasping hook to grab the chest, can you teleport it too?"

<Drem> "Maybe, but I certainly couldn't do it with both chests."

<Lak> "You don't need to," Lak called out. "Just drop the chest next to me."

<Lak> "And when you've got the second, fall with it."

Zephi falls over towards the chest and grabs it.

<Capn_Ascii> Zephi unceremoniously bellyflops onto the chest. (MINE!)

Zephi attempts to get the chest into the hole

<Capn_Ascii> After much struggling, you manage to get enough traction to get the chest sliding across the ice. You give it one last shove, and watch as it slides off the platform, falls into the void below, and then narrowly misses smashing Lak's head open as it falls down next to the elevator with him.

Zephi grabs Drem's hand again

<Drem> "Teleport to the other chest, I assume? Should we drop down to get Lak first?"

<Zephi> "Other chest, yeah"

Lak attempts to drag the chest into the elevator

Drem does the world-spinny thing to get both of them to the other chest.

<Capn_Ascii> *foop*

Zephi mimics the previous fally-downy-movement and while holding firmly onto the chest, tries to fall down the hole.

<Capn_Ascii> Zephi: You wrap yourself firmly around the box, push off with your feet, and experience a brief roller-coaster-like moment of freefalling through open space before landing next to Lak. The chest, in turn, lands on top of you. Ow.

Lak abandons his apparently futile effort to move the first chest (since he didn't move), and tries to get the second chest off Zephi

Zephi rubs her head "Thanks. now let's see what's inside."

Lak attempts to open the chests

Lak scratches the first half of his line 3 lines up.

<Capn_Ascii> Lak: You crack your knuckles, and pop the lids of the chests open...or at least, you try to. However, neither of them seems to want to cooperate - the lids are locked tight.

<Capn_Ascii> Lak: You jam your lockpick into the first check and wiggle it around a bit. After some fumbling around, you hear the lock click, and the chest springs open. Sproing!

<Capn_Ascii> You attempt to replicate the feat with Chest #2, but this one is stubborn and refuses to budge.

Lak kicks Chest #2 and tries again.

Zephi peeks in chest 1

<Capn_Ascii> Lak: With a several minutes' work, some strategically-placed kicks, and a few well-timed swear words, the chest finally yields to your obvious superiority. *sproing!*

<Capn_Ascii> Zephi: Inside the chest is...a pair of boots!

Lak grins and looks inside

<Capn_Ascii> Lak: Inside the chest is...a gold key! *sparkle, sparkle*

Zephi picks up the key and attaches it to her keyring. "Can you try and see what these boots are?"

Lak examines the boots after calling out "Okay, Drem, you can fall now!"

<Capn_Ascii> Lak: The boots are a simple pair of leather boots. The only unusual thing about them is that someone has marked the word "mucilage" on the hem of one of them.

<Lak> "Hmmm..." Lak switches his shoes out for the boots, then mutters "mucilage"

Drem takes a look down into the pit, and then drops down

<Capn_Ascii> Lak: Nothing happens. Apparantly, they're just boots. Apparantly.

<Lak> "Zephi: Do you notice anything different about me?"

Zephi shakes her head

Lak shrugs and decides to just leave 'em., putting his normal shoes in his backpack

Lak then gets out of Drem's way

<Capn_Ascii> Just in time, too. *WHAM!*

<Drem> "Ha! Again!"

<Lak> "Alright, we got a gold key. Next!"

Lak returns to the elevator.

<Drem> "If you insist..." Drem tags along

<Lak> "Where to, fellow travelers?"

Zephi follows.

<Drem> "Somewhere at least as fun as this room."

Lak presses the 38 button

<Capn_Ascii> ---END!---
