Chapter Two: Second Floor: Keys, Flashlights, and Pet Needs
<Capn_Ascii> As we join our heroes, we find them participating in that grand college past-time of trying to see how many adventurers they can cram into an elevator car. Current record: 3.
Zephi pokes the "10" button
<Capn_Ascii> The doors close...the elevator car rumbles gently upward for a while, before coming to a halt. *ding!* *swish*
Lak cautiously walks out
<Capn_Ascii> Hmm. The setup for this room is certainly more...impressive, to say the least.
Drem tags along
<Capn_Ascii> In the center of the room is a large, smooth pyramid, standing some 40 feet tall. Immediately surrounding the pyramid is a moat about 10 feet wide, filled with an as-yet-unidentified translucent green liquid substance.
<Capn_Ascii> Four stone pillars, about two feet wide and 40 feet tall, stand at the four corners of the square-shaped moat.
Lak walks cautiously towards the edge of the moat
<Capn_Ascii> And perched atop the pyramid is a treasure box.
Lak does not cross the square outlined by the pillars at first
<Drem> "Still no monsters? I'm surprised."
<Zephi> "I'm not, really. If there were monsters this low, the employees would be in trouble."
<Drem> "There's not even any unusually aggressive rats or anything."
Lak carefully pulls an arrow out and dips it into the liquid
Lak pulls the arrow back
<Capn_Ascii> Lak withdraws the arrow - or, rather, the rear half of the arrow. Everything that touched the fluid has been dissolved into stringy goo, which falls into the liquid and disappears.
Lak nods. "Okay. Acid. Good to know."
<Drem> "It could be a base."
<Lak> "Eh, either way, nasty."
<Drem> "Well, like I suggested last time, I could animate some flying ectoplasm."
Lak walks around carefully, looking to see if there are openings in the pyramid anywhere.
Zephi backs up and runs towards the moat, attempting to jump over it.
<Capn_Ascii> Lak: Not that you can see, no. The pyramid itself is made of stone blocks; relatively smooth ones. It would be easy to lose your footing and slide down (and into the moat), but you might be able to stand on it if you were especially careful.
<Capn_Ascii> Zephi: You back up, get a running start, and easily leap the moat! ...only to lose your footing almost instantly on the pyramid slope. You try to drive your sword into the stone as a handhold, but instead, the blade bounces off and skitters right out of your hand and over the moat. You, on the other hand, roll backwards and land *in* the moat. Almost immediately, you can feel the acid starting to dissolve your clothes - you'
<Capn_Ascii> here NOW if you value your life!
<Capn_Ascii> You'd better get out of here NOW if you value your life!
Zephi climbs out.
<Capn_Ascii> Zephi: You perform a quick backstroke and haul yourself out of the acid ASAP. Fortunately, you weren't submerged long enough to do any lasting damage - although your outfit now has the consistency of soggy towels. (07:26:38) Zephi grabs her swords and refolds it, stowing it. "Well, that wasn't fun."
<Drem> "Right, unless there's another objection, I'll just do the ectoplasm thing."
<Lak> "Eh, I got nothing better."
Drem places a hand on each temple and concentrates
<Drem> With the sound of breaking glass, a blob of translucent green stuff pours out from a point above the pyramid, quickly forming a chimp with wings
<Drem> "Go, my pretty! Get that chest!"
Zephi tries to dry out her clothing.
<Drem> The astral construct flies over and tries to pick up the chest
Zephi watches the construct, thinking. "I'm thinking we should do every third floor from here up. Better chance of finding something other than keys.."
<Lak> "Hey, now, no guarantee this is just a key. It probably is, but you never know."
<Zephi> "True. I'm just thinking outloud."
<Lak> "But these keys are obviously important anyway."
<Capn_Ascii> The flying monkey struggles to lift the chest, but can't quite seem to pull it off.
<Lak> "Try having him just open it. If it's a key we don't need the chest."
<Drem> "Awww, treasure chests are cool..."
<Lak> "Us having energy is cooler."
<Drem> The construct tries opening the chest so it can carry back only the contents
<Capn_Ascii> The cute lil' monkey opens the chest (Dah nah nah NAAAAAH!) and retrieves the contents - a gold key, and a small pouch.
<Drem> The astral construct flies back, places the items down in front of the party and dissolves away
Zephi attaches the key to her keyring.
Lak examines the pouch
<Capn_Ascii> LaK: My god...it's full of stars!
<Capn_Ascii> Little tiny gold stars. Real gold, too - judging by weight, there's probably a good 500g here.
Lak blinks and looks more closely.
<Lak> "Cool. So, where to now?"
Zephi stands and walks back to the elevator "Floor thirteen then? Or are we sticking to fives?"
<Lak> "I'd prefer to do more levels, not less, should it come to altering our structure."
<Lak> "Floor seventeen, perhaps?"
<Drem> "More levels means more loot. Let's go to thirteen and go by threes afterward."
<Lak> "Most loot's gonna be at the top, though."
<Lak> "But I seem to be outvoted. Very well."
Lak enters the elevator. "Thirteen it is!" he declares, pressing it when everyone enters.
<Zephi> "You're the one that said the keys are important. I'd rather have too many than have to backrtrack."
<Capn_Ascii> The elevator gently rumbles sideways for a few moments, before stopping. *ding!* *swish*
Zephi steps out and looks around.
<Capn_Ascii> This floor looks rather...boring. The only visible object here is a treasure box, sitting out in the middle of the open floor, unattended.
<Drem> "Obviously a trap."
Lak walks out cautiously, being careful to use Trapfinding all the way.
<Drem> "We could scout it out the hard way, or I could take a peek into the past."
<Lak> "I'll Trapfind.'
Lak pauses. "Peek into the past?"
<Drem> "Yeah. Didn't I mention I'm clairvoyant?"
<Zephi> "I don't remember hearing that."
<Lak> "Not until just now."
<Drem> "Huh. Maybe I wasn't supposed to tell you guys. Oh well."
<Capn_Ascii> Lak: You slowly stalk forward, keeping your eyes peeled for traps. Soon, you find one - and then another, and another. Like a cheap sweater coming unraveled, you find the thread of trap-setting and follow it until you can predict all of the traps in the room - and boy, are there a few!
<Capn_Ascii> Somebody was being overly paranoid setting up this devious little room. There are over a dozen trap doors (dark blue) surrounding the box, with precious little space to walk between them - and much of that space has hidden saw blades in the floor waiting to spring up and slice open your groin (light blue).
<Capn_Ascii> There are also two tremendous spike-covered plates in the ceiling (red) waiting to come THWOMPing down on unlucky passerby who step beneath them.
<Lak> "Wow. This is trap city. Um. I don't think I could communicate the complexity of this all."
<Zephi> "It's all yours then. Just take it slow."
Lak nods and cautiously approaches straight at the center.... until he stops, right before the plate would come crashing down on him.
Lak looks into how to disarm this trap.
Lak sees the sensor and sighs. He pulls out his long pole and sticks it out towards the center, trying to trigger the trap.
<Capn_Ascii> Lak: You whip out your big, long, hard pole, and start poking things with it. (A feeling not wholly unfamiliar to you). You can feel the pressure plate starting to give, but it's not quite triggering...maybe some elbow grease would help.
<Capn_Ascii> You lean on the pole hard enough for it to eventually push the plate all the way down. You hear a soft 'click'...and then see the huge spiked plate rushing down to meet you.
<Capn_Ascii> *yoink!* You quick jerk on your pole (also not unfamiliar to you), snatching it out of harm's way just as the plate comes down. *THWOMP!*
<Capn_Ascii> The plate smashes into the floor hard enough to rattle the trap doors around it, causing them to fall open - only darkness can be seen through them. The chain (formerly) holding the plate up goes limp.
<Capn_Ascii> The topside of the plate, at least, looks safe.
Lak rubs his forehed then climbs on top of the plate, proceeding towards the chest.
<Drem> "That trap seems a bit excessive."
Lak opens the chest.
<Lak> "There are a lot more. Do not try to help me here."
<Capn_Ascii> (Dah nah nah NAAAAAH!)
Zephi peeks down a hole. "No problem."
<Capn_Ascii> The box contains a silver key, and a bucket-shaped helmet.
Lak examines the helmet in more detail
Lak gets the amazing idea that he can examine as they travel. He walks back to the group, handing the key to Zephi.
Zephi attaches it to her keychain.
<Zephi> "Sixteen next?"
<Lak> "Sounds good."
Zephi walks back to the elevator
Drem tags along
Zephi pokes the 16 button
<Capn_Ascii> The elevator car rumbles gently through three parallel dimensions and a pocket universe for a while before the turbulence from a passing TARDIS sends it to land on the 16th floor. *ding!* *swish*
Lak looks out
<Capn_Ascii> Lak: You are surrounded by darkness. You can't see, hear, feel, or smell anything. Well, okay, actually you just can't see anything.
Zephi pulls out her sword and unfolds it, holding it up and looking around herself.
Lak smiles and whips out his Wand of Light. "Lumos!"
<Capn_Ascii> The two of you produce your instruments of brightitude and cast light out into the darkness. For just an instant - a single, fleeting, heart-stopping instant - you can see a huge, horrible, monsterous *thing* looming at you- black, chitinous hide, blood-covered claws, and dozens of razor-sharp teeth mere inches from biting your head off.
<Capn_Ascii> The moment the light hits it, however, it immediately recoils - in less than a second, it has vanished beyond the range of the light, hissing like a wounded animal.
<Drem> "Well, I guess another can't hurt," Drem says as he pulls out his everburning torch
<Capn_Ascii> You can hear the creature pacing around just outside the edge of the circle of light. It sounds pissed.
<Lak> "Something that's afraid of light... hmmm... yeah... let's stay lit. At all times."
Zephi steps hesitantly into the room.
<Lak> "Go to the middle, grab the chest, then get out of here."
Zephi takes another hesitant step forward.
Zephi looks around. "You two coming?"
Lak nods, and follows.
Drem tags along
Zephi takes another step. "Maybe you should light up more than what we're holding."
<Lak> "Hmmm. Us? Okay." Lak quickly mutters. "Lumos. Lumos. Lumos."
<Lak> Lak infuses the whole part with Light.
Zephi takes a couple of steps forward, straining her senses to find the creature. "I think maybe we should make a chain to the center of the room."
<Lak> "Sounds good."
<Zephi> "So Drem, stand withing 20 feet of the elevator door, Lak, you stand 20 feet away from him, and we'll see if we can see the chest. If there even is one."
<Lak> "Works for me."
Drem moves into position
Lak goes into position as well
Zephi takes another couple of steps forward, carefully staying in Lak's light.
Zephi looks for a chest
<Capn_Ascii> Zephi: Hey, there it is! Just sitting there, staring back at you...
Zephi pokes it with her sword.
Lak sees Zephi poke the chest with her sword and sighs. "JUST OPEN IT!"
<Zephi> "I don't like things staring at me.."
Zephi opens it.
<Capn_Ascii> Zephi: Spurred on by Lak's impatientness, you pop open the lid of the chest, and see - nothing. It's dark again. Even the light from your sword is blacked out...uh oh.
<Capn_Ascii> You can hear the...thing in the darkness growl.
Zephi closes the box with her sword and using the tip, pushes it back to elevator.
<Capn_Ascii> As soon as you close the box, your sword's light shines again. You hear that angry hissing noise again...
<Lak> As soon as Zephi passes him, Lak falls back towards the elevator.
Drem enters the elevator after the others
<Capn_Ascii> You can hear the creature padding around in the darkness, grumbling angrily.
Zephi punches the button for the 20th floor once everyone is in the elevator
Lak frantically looks for a "STOP ELEVATOR" button after it is pressed.
<Capn_Ascii> The elevator begins to move, but just as quickly, it grinds to a halt between floors. A warning sign overhead blinks "ELEVATOR STOPPED - PLEASE CALL TECHNICIAN" in red letters.
Zephi slowly opens the chest again with her sword.
Lak blinks, and turns to face the chest, blade out.
<Capn_Ascii> You open the chest...this time, you can see into it, but at the same time your sword stops glowing.
<Capn_Ascii> There's a silver key, as well as a small chunk of what looks like onyx.
Zephi looks inside
Zephi picks up the key and attaches it to her ring.
Zephi picks up and inspects the chunk of onyx.
Lak looks for a button to "CALL TECHNICIAN"
<Zephi> "I don't think we need a technicin, I think it's just an automatic message."
Zephi pulls out a sack from her bag tosses the onyx inside and tosses that bag back into her backpack.
Zephi presses the button for floor 20 again.
<Capn_Ascii> The gem stops radiating darkness the moment it's covered up.
<Capn_Ascii> Lak: You can see that a previously-unseen panel has opened up; behind it is a red phone handset. Before you can use it, however, Zephi presses the button; the elevator starts moving again, the sign turns off, and the panel slides shut again.
Lak blinks and shrugs. "Worked for us."
Lak waits for the doors to open
<Capn_Ascii> The elevator seems to take forever, but finally reaches its destination. *ding!* *swish*
Lak looks around
<Capn_Ascii> You exit the elevator, and find yourself in the middle of another large, empty room. The floor is completely featureless...well, almost.
<Capn_Ascii> Besides the red and blue shafts you've become used to, this floor has two new elevator tubes - a yellow one, and a green one (on the north and south ends of the floor, respectively).
<Lak> "Yellow or green?"
<Drem> "Another trap, I bet!"
<Lak> "Protecting what? I'll scout for traps, and we'll check the center, but I doubt that."
<Zephi> Well, if the south one is green, then green I guess.
<Lak> "Okay. Green it is! But first -- checking the center. Could be an invisible chest."
Lak heads that way.
Lak checks for traps along the way.
Zephi wanders over to the southern elevator as Lak works.
<Capn_Ascii> You sweep your way across the floor as you go, but you can't see anything in particular - the room seems genuinely spartan.
<Capn_Ascii> You soon make your way to the green elevator. It looks just like the red one you've been using, except that the door to open the button is covered with a large, heavy metal lid. Several keyholes surround the panel - presumably means to open the door
Zephi examines the keyholes.
<Capn_Ascii> There are a total of five keyholes, each color-coded: one gold, two silver, and two bronze.
Zephi wishes for a keyblade.
<Zephi> "Looks like we're backtracking. Like I said."
<Zephi> "We need one more bronze key."
Zephi walks back over to the red elevator
<Lak> "How do you know all 5 are needed? Did you even try just one set?"
<Drem> "Probably not a good idea to try."
Lak sighs. "Fine, our first bronze key was level... 5, was it not? So let's try 4 or something. If you insist on this."
<Zephi> "I was thinking three. But four works. Let's go."
<Drem> "I bet that level will be incredibly simple."
<Lak> "Hold on a sec." Lak kicks the floor a few times, looking for an invisible chest, before giving up and returning to the red elevator. "Good. Simple is good."
<Zephi> "I hope so."
Zephi punches the button for four when everyone is inside.
<Lak> "Here we go. You know, we could probably fetch as many keys as we wanted in the first 20 levels here... Just a thought."
<Drem> "That would take quite some time."
<Zephi> "We can come back if we need to. Less chance for loot down here though. Less chance for gold keys too, I suppose."
<Lak> "Alright, alright."
<Lak> "Hmmm, if 4 looks too hard, we'd better find another level. We'd just end up silver anyway."
<Zephi> "Very true.
<Capn_Ascii> Post-game note: The helm is a Helm of Underwater Action. Basically a magical diving helmet.
