Trinsic Tales:Planescapes/Chapter 04
Chapter Four: Lovin' An Elevator
<Capn_Ascii> "As we join our heroes, we find them being accosted by a 3-foot-tall fellow made of gingerbread living inside a giant doughnut. Somehow, they feel less than threatened."
<Leticia> "Dude, calm down. We're not thieves. We just want to ask you a few questions."
<Capn_Ascii> He brandishes the club meneacingly. Well, as meneacingly as a tiny guy made of candy can, anyway. "Then why did you try to break into my front door!?"
<Rayn> "No one answered."
<Leticia> "Um, I believe that was called a 'knock'. Your door exploded."
<Capn_Ascii> "Of course the door exploded!" He scowls an adorable candy scowl. "It's rigged with a trap to deter thieves! You set it off, ergo, you're thieves!" As he says this, he starts inching his way over toward the nearby wall, where you can see what looks like a delicious, cinnamon-flavored shotgun hanging on a gun rack. "Now off with you, before I fill you full of rock candy!"
<Leticia> "How does the trap tell between a thief and someone that just wants to talk? As I said, all we did is knock. Can't we talk about this like civilized beings?"
Rayn growls "Don't make me eat you. We just came to seek help. Not to be threatened."
<Leticia> "Rayn!" Leticia yells, frustrated at the not-helpful comment.
<Rayn> "What? It's not my fault. I'm hungry."
<Capn_Ascii> "Yeah, well, that's just perfect - you can eat SUGAR!" And by 'sugar', he apparantly means 'lead', as he grabs the gun and levels both barrels at you. If you act quickly, you might have just neough time to do something to stop him.
Sebydei quickly breaks out his whip, and with a snap of his wrist wraps it around the shotgun and tries to pull it out of his hands
<Capn_Ascii> A few bars of adventurous trumper fanfare are heard as, quick as a flash, Seb whips out (heh heh) his whip and snaps it at the little guy. He yowls in pain, clutching at his arm as the shotgun drops to the floor. Contrary to every action film ever made, the gun does not immediately fire on impact.
Leticia quickly grabs the gun and makes a point of not pointing it at anyone.
<Capn_Ascii> "AAAAH! Huh!? Hey, HEY!" He tries to grab the gun back, but by then you've gotten it safely away from him. Instead, he resumes brandishing the golf club, although he seems a little worried now. "Back off, man! I shoot three under par and I'm not going down without a fight!"
<Rayn> "So, will you help us now?"
<Capn_Ascii> His eyes dart back and forth, as he seems to realize for the first time that he's outnumbered.
Leticia sighs and backs away. "Someone else deal with the club. I don't want to risk losing this. Someone could and will get hurt."
<Sebydei> "Am I going to have to use the whip again?"
Rayn walks right up to him "We're not here to hurt you or steal anything. We're here to seek your wisdom. Are you going to keep causing trouble, or will you answer our questions so we can get the hell out of your house?"
<Capn_Ascii> "...maybe." He looks around again, then lowers the club, sighing a sigh of defeat. "...no. Dammit." He drops the club, then sits down on the floor. "Take what you want, just please don't hurt me."
<Sebydei> "We're not here to take anything."
<Leticia> Leticia steps back up, but being careful to keep the gun out of range of the candy man's grasp. "Okay, as I said, all we want to do is talk to you."
Rayn takes out the crystal "Can you tell us what this might be?"
<Capn_Ascii> The little man waves you away dismissively. "Look, just take what you're going to take and HOLY...!" He immediately jumps to his feet, his eyes wide, locked onto the crystal. "That's...that's a Trans-Dimensional Inter-Planar Quantum-Focusing Portal Lens! Where did you get that!?"
Rayn blinks "From a place. How does it work?"
<Sebydei> "Uh...you lost me at quantum..."
<Capn_Ascii> He immediately geeks out, forgetting for a moment that he's trying to be upset with you. "It's the main component for making an inter-planar portal device!" He looks at you all as you stare blankly back at him. "...makes portals to other planes on command?"
<Rayn> "Just the crystal alone?"
<Capn_Ascii> He shakes his head. "No, no. Don't you guys know *anything* about magitech?" He rolls his eyes. "If you build the right machine and use this as the lens, you can use it to open portals to other planes. It's a heck of a lot easier than looking for random portals that only go to one other plane at a time."
Rayn pulls out the blueprints "this machine?"
<Capn_Ascii> He stares in awe. "...uh, yeah. That machine." He blinks. "You actually have blueprints."
<Rayn> "Found them in the same place. Do you know anyone that might be able to help us build such a machine?"
<Leticia> "And is it reasonably portable?"
<Sebydei> "I don't know if it's related to that, but do you know what this does?" Sebydei pulls out the mysterious box with equally mysterious button
<Leticia> "Or this," Leticia comments, putting out her important-seeming metal stick.
<Elspeth> "Don't overload him. One thing at a time."
<Capn_Ascii> He completely ignores the latter two items, focused solely on the blueprints. "Yes, I...I could build you such a device. I've been trying for years, but I never had a complete set of schematics to work with..." He looks at Leticia. "There's two parts. The base unit is big and can't be moved, but that just generates the portals. The remote is handheld and is used to actually open the portals."
<Capn_Ascii> He gestures with his hands. "You program your destination into the remote and activate it. It signals the generator to open the portal ends where you want them, anywhere in the multiverse."
<Leticia> "Even if the generator isn't in the same plane as either the remote or either end?"
<Rayn> "So we could travel back to this base unit at any time and travel again from there?"
<Capn_Ascii> "Yes, exactly." He nods at Leticia. "You can open a portal to anywhere, *from* anywhere, at any time. Assuming the remote doesn't break, of course. Or run out of power. Always carry spare batteries."
<Rayn> "What is this batteries in which you speak of?"
<Capn_Ascii> "A power source. In this case, one full of magic."
<Rayn> "Oh. How long would it take for you to build this?"
<Capn_Ascii> "Maybe..." He has a hungry look in his eyes, the look of a techno-geek salivating over a new project. "Maybe a day. But I'd need all the parts first. I'd have to go to town and shop around."
<Capn_Ascii> He seems to remember something. "I should mention that the portal system isn't perfect. It'll take you to the *plane* you want, but like most planar travel it's hard to nail down exactly where you want the exit to end up *on* that plane."
<Leticia> "What's the Heisenberg radius?"
<Capn_Ascii> "You could exit into a general area or a town or the like, but don't count on being able to use it like a fancy teleporter. That's how I lost my leg..."
<Capn_Ascii> He glances down, and you realize for the first time that the gingerbread man's left leg isn't actually gingerbread - it looks more like sugar cookie dough.
<Capn_Ascii> "I used to have one of these machines. I kept trying to tweak it, get the target accuracy improved - but one trip the portal destabilized right when I was stepping through it. I went one way, and my leg went another."
<Leticia> "Alright, well... if you can do this, by all means, please do."
<Capn_Ascii> "Yes, yes, YES..." He throws open a door in the back of the living room, revealing a large workshop full of tools and spare parts. He immediately begins sifting through the junk, looking for things. "So much work to do..."
<Leticia> "Mind if we hang out while you build this?"
<Leticia> "Unless anyone has a better idea..."
<Capn_Ascii> He waves offhandedly at you. "Yeah, sure, do what you want."
<Capn_Ascii> He seems thoughroughly uninterested in your presence now.
<Elspeth> "Glad he's not trying to kill us anymore, at least, so what do we do?"
<Capn_Ascii> --SEVERAL GAMES OF YAHTZEE LATER...---
<Capn_Ascii> Tinkerer emerges from his 'lab', covered in grease. He tosses you what looks like a walkie-talkie with a bunch of buttons on it.
Leticia grabs and examines the 'walkie-talkie' in detail.
<Capn_Ascii> "Here's the remote. The generator is almost done, but like I said, I need to run to town for some parts. It'll take a few hours."
<Leticia> "Will it work once you're done if we just took this and left now?"
<Capn_Ascii> Sure. In fact, that's what this is for." He points out the speakers on the device. "The remote doubles as an inter-planar transmitter. Once the generator's done I can talk to you no matter where you are on the Planes."
<Leticia> "Awesome," Leticia comments, putting the remote+speaker safely in her Haversack.
<Capn_Ascii> "Whoa, wait!"
<Capn_Ascii> "Don't do that!" He reaches into the sack and quickly pulls the remote back out.
Leticia pauses. "What?"
<Leticia> "I don't want it to break..."
<Capn_Ascii> "You're dealing with inter-planar technology here. Putting it into a bag of holding is a bad idea. You might disrupt the trans-dimensional quantum circuitry."
<Elspeth> "What about a normal backpack?" She holds out her bag.
<Capn_Ascii> "Plus, you won't be able to hear me if I call you. Keep it in your pockets, or in a normal pack if you have to."
<Sebydei> "There's that quantum stuff again..."
<Leticia> "It's a haversack, not a bag of holding... but, point taken," Leticia grimaces.
<Leticia> Leticia sighs and hands the remote to Elspeth. "I wanted to keep this, but I won't be able to safely, it seems."
Elspeth pulls out two full quivers and hands them to Wulfric "Could you carry these please? They're getting heavy."
Elspeth takes the remote and wraps it in her blanket "I'll keep it save."
<Capn_Ascii> "It's fine now, but once the generator is running, don't put it into any bags of holding or portable holes. It might break the connection, and if that happens, you'll be stranded without support."
Wulfric nods and tosses the quivers safely into his Haversack.
<Capn_Ascii> "I'll head to town for some parts and keep working. I'll call you when it's done."
<Leticia> "Sounds good."
<Rayn> "Thank you."
<Wulfric> "So we're heading out now?"
<Leticia> "That would be advisable, yes."
<Wulfric> "Then let's go," Wulfric comments, looking out. He glances at Rayn. "Fly cover and lead on?"
Rayn nods and takes to the sky.
<Leticia> "Before we go..."
<Leticia> "Do you know what this is?" Leticia asks the candy man, showing him the metal stick again.
Rayn lands on the roof, waiting and listening.
<Sebydei> "Don't forget the mystery box," Sebydei says, holding up the aforementioned object
<Elspeth> "I want mystery items too..."
Wulfric grins at Elspeth. "What, am I not mysterious enough?"
Elspeth laughs. "Not what I meant and you know it."
<Capn_Ascii> "What, this?" He holds up the rod. "It's a Rod of Metal and/or Mineral Detection." He tosses it back to you. "Pretty much worthless on this plane, seeing as how most stuff is made out of candy."
<Leticia> "Ah, okay. Well, could be useful elsewhere. Better be careful on the Plane of Metals though, it'd probably explode."
<Capn_Ascii> "As for the box..." He examines it, then uses a screwdriver to remove the back panel and inpects the innards. "It's a remote control, but to what, I don't know. It doesn't have a trans-dimensional lens, so it would only work on something relatively nearby in the same plane. Where did it come from?"
<Sebydei> "From a bin at Butterscotch Goods."
<Capn_Ascii> "Ms. Butterscotch? Ooh..." He gets a dreamy look on his face at the mention of her, but then shakes himself out of it. "I assume you got the rest of these items from there too? Including the lens?"
<Capn_Ascii> "Hmm. She's been known to get her hands on some rare salvage, but nothing like portal components. It must have come from an outsider from another plane. If the remote is his too, I would assume he knows what it does." He puts the casing back together and hands it back.
<Wulfric> "Wasn't us."
<Capn_Ascii> "What about this wizard person you mentioned? Maybe it's his."
<Leticia> "I doubt he'd just leave stuff lying around. He was trying to get away from us, after all."
<Sebydei> "He wasn't the most organized person I've ever met. He might've lost it."
<Capn_Ascii> The little gingerbread man brandishes the blueprints. "He damned sure wouldn't leave a portal lens lying around - at least not on purpose. Maybe he lost his stuff and doesn't realize it's gone." He suddenly looks scared. "Which means...he might come looking for it. Uh." He gestures nervously toward the door. "Maybe you guys better go and, ah, take care of that. Quickly."
<Wulfric> "Let's go!" Wulfric roars, walking out and leading the way.
Sebydei tags along
<Capn_Ascii> "Oh! Uh...." He grins sheepishly. "...can I have my gun back?"
<Leticia> Leticia tosses the gun at the Candy Man. "Yeah."
<Capn_Ascii> "Thanks. I might need it if your friend comes looking for you. I better get the spare door out of the basement." He wanders off, muttering something about increasing the blast potency of explosive traps.
<Leticia> Leticia moves to follow Wulfric. "Yeah, let's get out of here and back to business."
<Capn_Ascii> The lot of you leave the Tinkerer to his...uh, tinkering, and resume your journey northward through the tasty plains.
<Capn_Ascii> It's a long, painful journey. Why, you must have been walking for almost an hour! Nonetheless, you summon the strength and determination to continue on, until...
<Capn_Ascii> ...you find yourself standing at the base of Mount Cocoa. A single, massively tall, dark brown mountain peak rising up out of the middle of the plains without a single other mountain nearby, as dramatic mountains are wont to do in RPGs like this.
<Wulfric> "Time to ascend!"
Rayn hovers above the party a bit. "This is a bit cliche."
<Capn_Ascii> The peak looks virtually unscalable, aside from a single winding path that's been hewn into the 'rock' (actually chocolate) - the aforementioned Rocky Road. It swerves up at steep angles, with lots and *lots* of steps. Hope you brought your Nikes.
Wulfric takes a deep breath and begins winding his way up Rocky Road.
<Rayn> "Boy, do I feel bad for you guys."
<Elspeth> "Oh shut up Rayn, you're not helping. I'm tired of walking."
<Rayn> "I'd carry you, but Augh, these arms are so heavy."
Leticia follows Wulfric, glaring at all the bickerers.
Elspeth follows as well, muttering things directed at Rayn.
Rayn flies overhead, ignoring the muttering.
Sebydei bounds up the steps. "I'll help make sure the path ahead is clear."
Rayn flies after Seby "Hey, that's my job."
<Sebydei> "Two heads are better than one."
<Sebydei> "In fact, I've already spotted something."
Sebydei walks over to one of the rock walls. "I think there's some footprints over here."
Rayn hovers nearby "Really?"
<Leticia> "Seeing footprints... well, that's better than hearing footsteps..."
<Capn_Ascii> Seb: You can practically *sense* the presence of something amiss here...but it seems to be just barely escaping your ability to put a finger on it. Don't you just *hate* when that happens?
<Sebydei> "I can't quite see anything...come take a look."
Rayn gets closer
<Leticia> Leticia lazily takes a look.
<Capn_Ascii> Leticia: As you take a look, you suddenly find yourself compelled to draw your sword.
<Leticia> Leticia frowns and draws her longsword, not really sure why she's doing so when she's a bow-wielder.
<Capn_Ascii> Not fully understanding why, you hold it up in front of your face, and shout "Sword of Omens! Give me sight...BEYOND sight!" And as you do, much to your surprise, you find that you can see *through* the wall beyond, as if it wasn't even there.
<Leticia> "Um... my sword isn't the sword of omens... but okay!"
<Capn_Ascii> Behind it is a short corridor, ending in a second, less obviously hidden door. You lower the sword, and to your surprise, the wall is still transparent. You can even see the little hidden catch that opens it. See? Right there. Riiiiight...*there*.
Leticia grabs the catch.
<Capn_Ascii> The secret door opens, revealing the inner door. There's a small button next to it.
<Sebydei> "I bet there's going to be another door beyond that one."
<Leticia> "Open the door or not?"
<Elspeth> "And that door will lead to another door.."
<Rayn> "I quess we should.."
<Sebydei> "Hey, no need to take it slow. I still have plenty of healing left."
<Leticia> Leticia nods and tries to open the door... if there's no obvious means of opening it, presses the button.
<Capn_Ascii> Leticia: There isn't...the door is totally smooth, with no handles or catches of any kind. It doesn't matter, though, as the button does indeed prove to open it. It slides open to the side, revealing...
<Capn_Ascii> ...the interior of an elevator. There's a dwarf inside, standing next to the control panel, wearing a red bellboy-style uniform. He speaks in your direction, an extremely bored 'wage slave' look of disinterest on his face. "Mount Cocoa Express Elevator service. Welcome to Mount Cocoa."
<Leticia> "Cool! Uh... where does this elevator come out?"
<Capn_Ascii> "The peak, sirrah." He nods.
<Sebydei> "Oh, really? I was hoping it went down even further."
<Leticia> "Sounds good. Let's go," Leticia comments, getting in the elevator.
<Wulfric> Wulfric nods, but gets his hammer ready, just in case it's a trap.
Elspeth gets in.
Sebydei also gets into the elevator
Rayn follows as well, albeit hesitantly.
Wulfric steps in
<Capn_Ascii> Checking to see if anyone else is waiting to board, the dwarf then pulls a lever to close the door. "Express elevator to the peak! Hold onto your hats!" He presses a button...
<Capn_Ascii> ...and the car chakes slightly as it begins a perfectly expectable, gradual ascent. What, you were expecting it to shoot up super-fast or something? C'mon, I'm not *that* predictable. Give me *some* credit, man.
<Capn_Ascii> The elevator grinds away quietly for several minutes, as the five of you try to avoid making awkward eye contact with each other in the silence.
<Capn_Ascii> Eventually, the car comes to a stop. The dwarf pulls the lever, opening the door. "Top floor."
Rayn gets out.
Leticia does too
Sebydei continues tagging along
Rayn immediately takes back to the air, hovering above the ground.
<Capn_Ascii> You step out of the car and onto a rocky plateau - if the dwarf is to be believed, you're now at the top of the mountain.
<Capn_Ascii> You're inclined to believe him, as standing before you is the looming tower that you heard mentioned before. It's on the other side of a wide, deep crevasse - the only readily apparant means of crossing which is a narrow land bridge.
<Capn_Ascii> Off to your left, you can see the top of the mountain path. Whoo boy, what kind of a sucker would you have to be to walk up that instead of taking the elevator? ;)
<Sebydei> "Ah, the conveniences of modern technology."
<Wulfric> "So, shall we head in?"
Leticia eyes the bridge, trying to see how safe it is.
<Capn_Ascii> Leticia: As you take a closer look, you notice a tiny, nearly imperceptible flicker. You quickly realize that the 'bridge' is a fake - it's a magical illusion, placed there to trick unsuspecting adventurersinto blindly stepping off into the chasm to their deaths. The *real* bridge is off to one side of the gorge - cleverly painted to look exactly like open space, ala Last Crusade. Devious bastards.
<Leticia> "Wow. That bridge is fake. The real bridge looks like space," Leticia pointed, then stepped on the real bridge to prove her point.
<Elspeth> "Neat. Is it stable?"
<Capn_Ascii> It certainly *feels* stable.
Leticia leads on. "Let's go two at a time to be safe, but I think it will be fine."
<Sebydei> "Uh...I'll go last."
Elspeth follows Leticia.
Rayn flies to the other side and lands.
Wulfric waits until Elspeth finishes crossing, then follows.
Sebydei tags along after Wulfric
<Capn_Ascii> Sadly...er, I mean, gladly, the entire party makes it across without incident. They now find themselves standing before a pair of large wooden doors that open into the tower interior. Hmm...this seems familiar somehow...
Leticia sighs. "This again." Leticia tries to do the whole poke-to-force-doors-off-hinges thing. Or just open it.
<Rayn> "At least it's wood this time, if you pulling the doors off the hinges doesn't work."
<Elspeth> "Should we help?"
<Leticia> "Darn. Not this time. Any other ideas?"
Rayn looks at Wulfric's muscles. "I think he should try."
Wulfric nods and walks up to the doors. "Here goes nothing."
<Capn_Ascii> Leticia and Wulfric both put their all into it, but the door won't open. You're not sure if it's barred, or just really heavy.
<Sebydei> "Allow me..."
<Capn_Ascii> Seb: Nope. No go, girly man.
<Sebydei> "...okay, time for the artillery."
Rayn sighs a puff of smoke. "Everyone stand back. I've been dying to light something on fire all day."
Elspeth hides behind wulfric.
Sebydei steps back
<Leticia> "NO, Rayn. This won't help..." Leticia sighs and steps back. "It won't work, but go."
Wulfric steps back
Rayn expells a cone shaped flame at the door.
<Capn_Ascii> Your door is afire.
<Capn_Ascii> The flames crackle and dance. The door is definitely on fire...but it might take a while to actually burn through.
<Elspeth> "Uh. How are we getting past the fire?"
<Rayn> "I don't know. I just start the fires. I don't put them out."
<Sebydei> "It can't burn forever."
<Capn_Ascii> It takes the better part of an hour, but finally you can see a hole through the door where the flames have burned through. Good thing, too, because the fire is petering out.
<Sebydei> "Well...at least it kept us warm."
<Leticia> "I guess that did work... eventually."
Rayn kicks out part of the door where the hole is forming.
<Sebydei> "I had expected this to attract a lot more attention."
<Rayn> "Nothing to be done from this side."
Rayn peeks through the hole as she widens it.
Leticia looks as well
Elspeth does as well.
Sebydei takes a look along with everyone else
Wulfric looks as well
<Capn_Ascii> Peering inside the hole, you see...
<Capn_Ascii> ...the gaping, slavering, many-toothed maw of a gigantic grue.
<Capn_Ascii> ---END SESSION---
