Chapter Two: Treasure! Sweet!
<Capn_Ascii> ---BEGIN SESSION---
<Capn_Ascii> As we join our heroes, we find them knee-deep in the dead. Er, I mean, in rich, delicious FUDGE! Om nom nom.
<Rayn> "I'm going to be sticky for the rest of my life, I just know it.."
<Leticia> Leticia continues following the tracks silently.
<Sebydei> "At least we won't have to worry about starvation."
<Capn_Ascii> Although you *do* have to worry about diabetes...
<Rayn> ((And cavities))
<Capn_Ascii> You spend the next hour slogging through the sweet, sticky muck that constantly threatens to suck the boots right off your feet. Except for Mrs. Fancy Flying Pants up there.
<Leticia> Dave gives off a soft screech of arrogance.
Sebydei grumbles. "Wish I could fly..."
<Capn_Ascii> Fortunately, the trail is easy to follow, and before long you find yourselves closing on the structure you noticed while falling from above. It looks like a gingerbread house, except it's a whole *village* on that theme.
<Leticia> "Uh-oh. Witch alert."
<Capn_Ascii> Gingerbread houses with frosting holding them together, cinnamon breadsticks stacked together and filed to points on top to form a city wall, a graham cracker gate with licorice ropes to open and close it...
<Leticia> "Why am I reminded of the past?"
<Rayn> "It does look familiar."
<Capn_Ascii> It's a small village - no more than 7 or 8 buildings. The gates are opened - standing in front of them are a pair of gingerbread men with serious expressions on their face. They're holding spears made from candy canes sharpened into points, and although they wear no armor or clothes of any kind, frosting has been painted onto their fronts to look like plate armor.
<Capn_Ascii> One of the guards walks up to you - as he gets closer, you realize that he's less than half your height. He looks up at you with a wide grin, and speaks in a sing-song voice. "Welcome to Sugar Town! The sweetest place on the Planes!" Then his smile changes to a frown, his gumdrop eyes glaring at you as he continues in a much deeper, serious tone of voice. "State your business, outsider."
Rayn clears her throat. "Greetings. We would like to enter."
<Capn_Ascii> His partner pipes up. "No outsiders allowed in town without official business. Or tourist dollars."
Rayn pats her armor looking for tourist dollars.
<Rayn> "We're following a potentially dangerous wizard. and he went into your town."
<Capn_Ascii> The guard frowns. "Oh, he did, did he? What makes you think that?"
<Leticia> "We followed the tracks. And yes, I know how."
<Capn_Ascii> "What tracks?" He blinks, then looks down at the obvious footprints running right beneath his legs. "...oh. I see. Ahem."
<Capn_Ascii> He stands upright and salutes. "Very well. Proceed into town and speak with the village elder." He and his partner step out of the way to allow you access.
Rayn nods. "Thank you."
Rayn goes into town
<Leticia> Leticia follows.

<Capn_Ascii> As you step into town, you see some of the various buildings you'd expect to see in a regular town. There's an inn/tavern, and a general store, and a blacksmith's stall (where you can see a gingerbread man dutifully hammering out a beautiful sword made from transparant hard sugar). There's even a fountain in the middle of the square with what looks like cherry soda spraying out of it.
<Capn_Ascii> A number of gingerbread people, male and female alike, are strolling around, as random villager NPCs are wont to do. You notice that they don't sink into the fudge like you do, presumably because of their lightweight bodies.
<Capn_Ascii> One particular gingerbread man, sporting a long beard made of white cotton candy and 'wearing' frosting robes, waves at you with a cane made of pretzel. "Hello there, youngn's!"
<Capn_Ascii> He hobbles over. "You folks don't look like you're from around here. Planewalkers, I take it?"
<Sebydei> "I think this is more of a one-time thing. We're after someone."
<Capn_Ascii> "So, you're not tourists?" The little man sighs. "That's a shame. We used to get visitors from all over the Planes. Now we're struggling to make do without the tourism income."
<Leticia> "Uh... nope, sorry. We're going after some wizard guy. He's really dangerous."
<Capn_Ascii> He sighs again. "Oh." Then he perks up. "Oh! Yes, I think I know who you're talking about. He was running around here earlier, buying supplies. Seemed like a nice enough fellow, although he did try to eat Mrs. Robinson's head before we explained how much of a social faux-pax that is around here."
<Leticia> "Yes, I can imagine that second-degree murder would be something inadvisable... do you know where he went?"
<Capn_Ascii> He shakes his head. "I'm afraid not. I saw him running around earlier, then he was gone. I assume he left town?"
<Leticia> "Do you know anyone who might know this?"
Rayn looks for residual footprints.
<Capn_Ascii> He points his cane at the general store. "He was in there earlier buying some things. The storekeeper might know."
<Leticia> "Sounds good," Leticia comments, heading in the direction of the general store.
Sebydei tags along
<Capn_Ascii> Rayn: You do see some footprints...but they stop only a few feet inside the gate. There's no sign of them within the village itself. Maybe you should ask the elder about it?
<Capn_Ascii> The lot of you approach the general store. It looks just like a gingerbread house, except life-sized - with windows of transparant hard sugar, railings of candy cane, and a sign with the words "Butterscotch Goods" spelled out in frosting.
Leticia walks on in
<Capn_Ascii> You enter the store. The inside looks much like the outside, except that in here there are dozens of graham cracker shelves stocked with all sorts of items. Many of them look to be made out of candy, but there are a surprising number of familiar, non-sugary tools and equipment items as well. The counter is manned by an obviously female gingerbread person, judging from her thick, curly, yellow cotton candy hair and the 'dress' pattern on her front. She smiles. "Hiiii! Welcome to Butterscotch Goods! I'm Ms. Butterscotch!" She waves a bit too excitedly.
<Leticia> "Hi, Ms. Butterscotch. We've come looking for a certain... wizard. You know anything about where he may have gone?"
<Capn_Ascii> "Wizard?" She cocks her head to the side and gives you a quizzical look, like a confused puppy. "I dunno, what's a wizard look like?"
<Leticia> "Well, he was human... and evil... and uh... hmmm, not sure how to describe him, really, we didn't get that great of a look."
<Capn_Ascii> She blinks. "Human...?"
<Capn_Ascii> Then she grins.
<Capn_Ascii> "Oh, you mean the guy who wasn't made of candy."
<Leticia> "Yes. That guy. Like us."
<Capn_Ascii> "He bought a bunch of eee-lek-tron-ik...." She stumbles over the word as if she's unfamiliar with it. "...stuff, that I got in a trade with another tourist a while back. I don't know what any of it was, but he seemed to."
<Leticia> "Oh, great... fake magitech," Leticia mutters. "I don't know much either, but... that can't be good. Do you know where he went, and do you have any of these items left?"
<Capn_Ascii> She looks thoughtful. "Well, I heard him say he was going to the tavern for a drink before he left town. He didn't say where he was going." She shrugs. "As for the...stuff, yep, I've got a whole box of it. Wanna see?" She gestures to a large bin in one corner - "BARGAIN JUNK".
Rayn peeks in the bin.
Leticia decides she might as well take a look.
Sebydei goes with the crowd
<Capn_Ascii> It's a bin. Full of...stuff. All sorts of random metal parts and wires and circuit boards and other stuff that shouldn't exist in a D&D setting but shhh, don't tell anyone.
<Capn_Ascii> Leticia: You find a strange contraption...it looks like a stick, about three feet long, with a handle and trigger on one end. On the other is a small, reddish creature with mean-looking eyes and a large mouth, which opens when the trigger on the handle is pulled.
<Capn_Ascii> Seb: You find a small, box-like contraption with a single button on it. It's unlabeled, but that's never stopped you before.
Leticia experiments and uses the trigger, being careful to keep the end pointed away from anything important.
<Capn_Ascii> Rayn: As you dig through the pile, your hand unexpectedly brushes against something made of paper. You fish it out...it's a blueprint! It's rather complex-looking, but the header at the top immediately catches your interest: "INTER-PLANAR PORTAL GENERATOR REMOTE ACCESS DEVICE".
Rayn blinks. "Oohh.. this could work."
<Capn_Ascii> Leticia: You pull the trigger...the creature's mouth opens! You release it...the mouth closes! Hours of fun for all!
<Rayn> "How much for this stuff?"
<Leticia> "Eh, I chose Dave over a pet Orat... why would I want a stick Orat?"
<Sebydei> "I must find out what this box is..."
<Sebydei> "Hmm, may I see that blueprint?"
<Capn_Ascii> Ms. Butterscotch answers from behind the counter. "I sell it by weight, mostly. Although...where'd that paper come from? I didn't put that in there..."
Rayn hands it to Sebydei. "It's still for sale though, right?"
Sebydei takes a few minutes to compare the mysterious box with the mysterious blueprint
<Capn_Ascii> "Um..." She blinks. "...well, if you found it in the bin, then I guess it is."
Rayn nods and continues digging through the box for anything interesting.
Leticia decides to look for anything else useful too
<Capn_Ascii> Seb: The blueprints are far too complicated for you to even begin to understand how to construct the device pictured. You do, however, note that the box doesn't seem to be a part of it..
<Capn_Ascii> Rayn: You dig through the box again, and this time come away with a small, blue crystal with an odd, oblong shape. It glows dimly, and you get the feeling it might be important.
<Capn_Ascii> Leticia: Your turn...you find something that looks almost like a spell wand, except it's made of metal and covered with glowing lights.
Rayn takes the blueprints back and goes back to the counter. She lays both the blueprints and the crystal on the counter "How much for these?"
<Capn_Ascii> Ms. Butterscotch takes the items and weighs them on a flat scale. "Um...7 gold."
Leticia realizes the potential usefulness of her stick, and plops it on the counter. "And this, please."
Rayn hands over 7 gold.
<Capn_Ascii> She rings you up, a beaming smile on her face. "Thanks!"
Rayn smiles back and shoves them in her haversack. "Thank you."
Sebydei takes the mystery box to the counter. "And I'll buy the box."
<Capn_Ascii> She proceeds to ring everyone up...the total comes out to 20 gold for Leticia's 'wand', and 15 gold for Seb's Box of Mysterious Mystery.
Leticia grumbles and forks over the 20 gold.
<Capn_Ascii> "Thanks! Although I can't help you with that stuff. I don't even know what most of it is..."
Sebydei hands over the necessary gold for the box of undefined purpose
<Capn_Ascii> You've successfully made your first purchase in another dimension. Now what?
<Rayn> "Do you happen to know where the human wizard went after he left here?"
<Leticia> "She already said the tavern," Leticia grumbled. "So let's go."
<Capn_Ascii> "Like I said, I think he went to the bar. He didn't come back here, though."
<Rayn> "Oh right. Okay. Thank you."
Rayn leaves and heads for the Tavern.
