Chapter Four: Snakes and Ladders... Er, Stairs

--BEGIN SESSION--

<Capn_Ascii> "As we join our heroes, we find them re-tracing their steps, hopeing to leave this odd place the way they came in. ...why is there this strange sense of foreboding in the air?"

<Ember> "Where's that disembodied voice coming from?"

<Marilyn> "I got a bad feeling about this..."

<JuroBoza> Boza shrugs. "Eh, what's the worst that could happen?"

<Luna> "I hear nagas are dangerous"

<Marilyn> "You saying that. Hey, while we've got a second of relative peace here... anyone know what this ring is? I didn't want the salamander to see it." She holds it up.

Luna takes it and inspects it.

<Ember> "So what's that bell you mentioned?"

<Marilyn> "Well, it's an artifact of some sort. I heard about it. I figured I'd better investigate and acquire before someone else did. I don't have a lot of information, though."

<Ember> "And that's what you wanted to do before you returned home?"

<Marilyn> "When I didn't realize we had an invasion on our hands, yes. We can't have artifacts being left around for any random vagrant to claim."

Ember nods. "So why didn't you mention it sooner?"

<Marilyn> "Because it's frankly none of your business."

<Marilyn> "That is to say, classified."

<Ember> "So we should just leave you to your devices then? Because that worked so well last time."

Marilyn frowns at Ember. "What exactly are you wanting here?"

<Ember> "Transparancy." She glances over at Marilyn. "My job was to bring you back to your castle, your highness. You wanted to stay, you wanted us to risk our lives to complete your personal mission." She looks forward again. "All I want is the truth."

<Marilyn> "And you've got the truth, which is frankly a lot more than you're entitled to. And I resent my mission being called 'personal', just because it is not public. Secrets are kept for a reason. And I outrank the individual that gave you the job, and thus, have far more ability to pay for mine than he does. It's not like I'm not going to go through with the reward."

Rodrigo glares hard at Ember. "I'd do this for free. You should be grateful for the opportunity to participate here."

<Marilyn> "Not helping, Rodrigo."

Ember shrugs. "I called it personal because you were here alone, that's all."

<Marilyn> "I'm alone because in general I'm far more capable than most other individuals I have access to. The rest of you here have shown sufficient competence to be an asset to my mission and not a hindrance. As what happened back in the room with the salamanders should have proven, I am no mere aristocrat."

Luna watches Ember about to respond and cuts in "This it getting us no where. Everyone shut up. We might not be alone here."

<Capn_Ascii> Luna: Your keen senses tell you that this is...a Ring of Swimming! So pressssscious...

Luna holds the ring back out. "It's a ring of Swimming. Anyone swim? I don't."

<Marilyn> "Not me."

Rodrigo smiles. "I can swim."

Luna flips it to rodrigo, like a coin.

Rodrigo nods, but holds it out in case anyone else wants it.

Ember shakes her head. "Thanks though."

Rodrigo puts the ring on.

<Capn_Ascii> Marilyn and Ember bicker between themselves for most of the walk back. Eventually, you re-enter the first large room.

<Capn_Ascii> It looks more or less like you remember...except for the distinct lack of a door in the western wall. Uh.

<Ember> "Well, that's new."

<Capn_Ascii> The bare wall stares at you, as if taunting you with its wall-ness.

<Capn_Ascii> Actually, now that you look closer, there's a small sticky note adhered to the brick.

Ember goes over to read it.

<Capn_Ascii> The note says: "Dear Adventurers: As you have no doubt realized, the door you entered this floor through is gone. I knew the royals would send someone to find their missing Marilyn, and was watching for your arrival. Please flip letter to Side B."

Ember mutters. "So they do know we're here. Fantastic." She flips it over.

<Capn_Ascii> The note continues: "I used my powers to link this room to the surface, then let you 'sneak' inside before closing it off behind you. You're now trapped on the bottom floor of my 20-floor dungeon (of DOOM!). Good luck getting out now, suckers. Ha ha ha. Please flip letter to Side C."

Ember looks for a side C

<Capn_Ascii> Ember: You turn the page over again, and oddly enough, the letters on that side are different. "Just to make this more fun, I've decided not to tell my minions that you're here. I like to think of it as a training exercise for them. Anyone who survives your egress can join me in assaulting the city and seizing power in a violent coup. Anyway, have fun escaping! Yours, Warlord Titus."

<Ember> "Well good. none of them are aware we're coming then." She goes back to the group and summarizes what she read on the post-it note."

<JuroBoza> "At least he was polite enough to tell us what's happening," Boza says

<Marilyn> (flip those lines)

<JuroBoza> "Wait...how did he make a letter with three sides?" Juro asks

<Capn_Ascii> "P.S: Please flip letter to Side D."

<Marilyn> "It's obviously a multidimensional transscripting vortex paper."

<Luna> "He probably knew we were reading it and changed it?"

Ember looks for a side D.

<Capn_Ascii> *flip*

<Capn_Ascii> "P.S.S: This message will self-destruct in 5 seconds. Explosive Runes, bitches!" This is followed by what looks like a doodle of a hand giving a devil-horns sign. Also, the page is glowing.

Ember throws it

<Capn_Ascii> Ember: You wad up the paper and throw it into a corner. It shakes violently, then...

<Capn_Ascii> ...the paper unfurls, as a little flag with the word "BANG" on it pops out.

Marilyn snickers.

Ember chuckles, picking the paper back up and puts it in her Haversack.

Marilyn sighs. "Alright, time to go do... what was recommended earlier," Marilyn decides not to elaborate in a room that's obviously bugged.

Ember nods

Rodrigo nods as well.

Marilyn leads the way towards the room with the nagas.

Luna follows

Ember as well

<Capn_Ascii> *march, march*

JuroBoza tags along

<Capn_Ascii> You eventually come to a closed wooden door. It doesn't seem to be locked, but you can hear hissing noises from the other side.

Marilyn waves her wand and casts invisibility on herself.

Rodrigo positions himself right behind Marilyn, staring at where her butt would be if he could actually see it.

Ember opens the door for Rodrigo.

Marilyn quickly steps into the room and to the side to get a good spot to sneak attack.

Luna hides behind a wall

Ember hides as well

JuroBoza stays out in the corridor

Rodrigo follows, greataxe at the ready. "This base has been deemed illegal by order of Her Royal Highness, Princess of Belcadar. Hand over your maps and we'll allow your existence to be continued."

<Capn_Ascii> Inside the room, a pair of spirit nagas look up from the table that they're currently playing cards at (using the tips of their tails to hold them). "Huh?"

<Capn_Ascii> One of the nagas (let's call him Naga 1) just gives you a confused look...but the other begins to panic. "Oh god, oh god, oh god, oh god! It's the fuzz, man! I TOLD you they'd find us down here!!"

<Capn_Ascii> Naga 1 glares at him. "Don't be stupid! It's just some random dead adventurer."

Ember runs in to beck them up.

Luna does as well

JuroBoza steps inside

<Capn_Ascii> "Correction: Four dead adventurers." He immediately goes on the attack!

<Rodrigo> "I am not *just* an adventurer. I am a deputized operative for Her Royal Highness," Rodrigo retorts.

Luna punches the nearest naga.

<Capn_Ascii> The naga blinks. "Ow."

<Capn_Ascii> Then, it blinks again. ".....OH MY GOD I'M BLIIIIIND!"

Rodrigo crashes his Greataxe into the same naga! "You really should have listened."

<Capn_Ascii> The naga neatly splits in half down the middle as Roddy (mind if I call you Roddy?) brings his axe down straight through its body. "OH MY GOD I'M DEEEEAAAAAAD!" *flop*

<Rodrigo> "Yes. Yes you are. Next time don't fail your verbal comprehension check."

<Rodrigo> "Oh, I guess there isn't a next time. Sorry."

<Capn_Ascii> The bisected naga makes gurgling noises.

Rodrigo steps forward over the body to clear the way for the team to attack the other naga if necessary.

<Capn_Ascii> Naga #2 just stares at Rodrigo in sheer, abject horror. "Pleasedontkillmepleasedontkillmepleasedontkillme..."

Rodrigo then looks at the remaining naga. "The maps."

Ember threateningly steps forward as well

JuroBoza stays back and crosses his arms

<Capn_Ascii> "The m-maps? Oh, yeah, sure, sure!"

<Rodrigo> "Well, get to it!"

<Capn_Ascii> He slithers over to a strongbox in the corner, and proceeds to dial the combination into it. The door opens.

<Rodrigo> "Everything in there. On the table. Slowly."

<Capn_Ascii> The naga complies, scooping out a number of items and laying them on the table. You note that there's already a pile of gold on the table, apparantly the take from the night's card game.

Marilyn goes over to the table and gives the items a careful examination.

<Capn_Ascii> Marilyn: Aside from the scroll case containing the blueprints, there's a pile of 2,000 gold coins, three gemstones, three pieces of jewelry, and a pair of gauntlets.

Marilyn, still invisible, divides the gold into six piles, with a seventh pile of two gold, reads off the loot, then comments. "Someone else should identify this stuff. Also the gold's split to six equal piles. Two gold can't be divided though."

<Capn_Ascii> The naga stares as the take divides itself.

Luna grabs the gemstones, jewlery, and gauntlets and looks them over.

Luna takes her gold and tosses the necklaces, gemstones, and remaining two gold into a sack "None of these are magical. We'll have to sell them. these gauntlets though..."

Marilyn takes her 333 gold

Rodrigo takes his 333 gold

Ember takes her gold.

JuroBoza accepts his share of the gold

<Capn_Ascii> Luna: You can't actually tell quite what the gauntlets are; all you know is that they have a faint aura of transmutation around them.

Luna hands them to Ember "Here, see if you can do anything with them."

Ember takes them and looks them over. "Too tough for you, huh?" She looks them over.

<Luna> "Shut up.."

<Capn_Ascii> Ember: Oh, pfft. These are *obviously* Gauntlers of Ogre Strength. Luna is such a n00b.

Ember holds them out to Rodrigo. "Gloves of Ogre Strength. Think you can make use of these?"

<Rodrigo> "They're probably better than these Brute Gauntlets. Especially once I run my Gauntlets out of charges for the day," Rodrigo confirms, taking them.

Ember looks over the blueprints

Rodrigo swaps out his gloves, putting his Brute Gauntlets into his haversack.

<Rodrigo> "Now, we're going to be heading out. Is there anything we should know about what we're going to be facing?"

Rodrigo addresses the naga.

<Capn_Ascii> "Ohgodohgodohgodohgod..." The naga seems to be too busy having a panic attack to be of much more help.

<Rodrigo> "Now, what are you going to tell anyone that shows up?" A pause, then, "Nothing. Good answer. Let's move out!"

Marilyn leads the way out, "One room to go," she announces, allowing people to follow her voice.

Ember follows

Luna does as well

Rodrigo follows.

<Capn_Ascii> You make your way through the twisty corridors to the only room you haven't yet broken into.

<Capn_Ascii> The door stands there, locked.

Marilyn checks the door for traps and proceeds to open the lock.

<Capn_Ascii> *click*

Marilyn takes a peek inside the room.

<Capn_Ascii> The room is empty. Except for...

<Capn_Ascii> ...the stairs! A spiral staircase in the far corner leads up into the darkness above.

<Marilyn> "Next level. Time to charge ahead," Marilyn comments. "Well, walk carefully ahead to prevent running into traps, of course."

Marilyn puts actions to words and leads the way carefully up the stairs.

Rodrigo follows.

JuroBoza tags along

Ember keeps following

Luna does as well.
