Trinsic Tales:Hell's Bells/Chapter 03
Chapter Three: You Can't Spell Slaughter Without Laughter
<Capn_Ascii> "As we join our heroes, we find them staring down a roomful of snoring salamanders, beyond a door whose doorknob seems vaguely unclean, for some reason. How will they approach this encounter? Let's watch..."
Marilyn gets herself into the middle of the room, in position to strike, and gestures for everyone else to get into good positions as well.
Marilyn pulls her blades out and gets ready to attack at the first sign of awakening, or when everyone's in position.
Ember moves in
Luna does as well
JuroBoza steps in and strikes a martial arts pose
Rodrigo follows into position last.
<Capn_Ascii> Amazingly, the salamanders don't seem to hear all this un-Move-Silently-ed movement. Must be heavy sleepers.
Rodrigo waves his wand and casts Silence, preventing noise from spreading!
<Capn_Ascii> Suddenly, a man on a cell phone walks in. "Can you hear me now? ...no? Really?" He wanders off again.
<Capn_Ascii> The sound of the salamanders' collective snoring abates.
Marilyn tries to coup the nearest salamander. Assassin's Stance, activate. Blades, gogogo!
<Capn_Ascii> Marilyn gently pokes the creature with her blade. It instantly, and violently, explodes in a shower of flaming gore.
Desoria tries to fire an arrow through the neck of one. While definitely hitting it, she fails to kill it, and it wakes up, very confused and irritated
<Capn_Ascii> ...of course, you can't actually *hear* that scream of pain and indignation, but it's pretty clear from the salamander's face that that's what it would sound like if you could.
<Capn_Ascii> Between sleep and suddenly bleeding (or leaking lava, or...whatever these things have), it's too shocked to move. Now's your chance!
Desoria thrusts her hands out, sending a ball of electricity flying out to singe the salamander's hide. ((Electric Orb, Lesser))
<Capn_Ascii> The salamander jerks around as it gets electrocuted. *brzzzt* Man, this is *not* a pleasant way to wake up.
Rodrigo gets to the side of the salamander and tries to bury his axe in it.
<Capn_Ascii> Eew, that's a nasty axe-burying-in-flesh sound. You guys are missing out.
Ember runs over and attempts to finish it off.
<Capn_Ascii> Ember launches an attack, and finally puts the poor, tortured salamander out of its misery. Silently, of course.
<Capn_Ascii> Silent...but deadly. Heh heh.
Marilyn nods in approval, then goes to work on the one a bit to the right.
Luna moves in to help if needed.
Ember turns and performs a coup on the one next to her
<Marilyn> Marilyn steps over that one and moves to the one that's now surrounded.
Luna keeps up with marilyn to help if needed.
<Capn_Ascii> Ember: *SPLUTCH*
Luna moves her line down to here.
<JuroBoza> Juro and Boza silently bicker with each other for a few moments, and then kneel down to break a salamander's neck
Marilyn gets in a helper position. Just in case.
Rodrigo also goes to help.
<Capn_Ascii> JuroBoza: *CRACK!*
Ember moves and attacks the next one
<Capn_Ascii> Ember: *SKLOORTCH*
Marilyn walks around to the other side of another one and makes her strike.
<Capn_Ascii> Marilyn: *MURDER*
Ember attacks the next one.
Luna moves to help ember
<Capn_Ascii> Ember: *PILLOWSMOTHER*
Ember moves forward into position
JuroBoza takes a step and plays another round of snap-that-neck
<Capn_Ascii> JuroBoza: *GAROTTE*
Rodrigo moves into position to help Marilyn.
Marilyn slices into the next target!
<Capn_Ascii> Marilyn: *JULIENNE*
Ember attempts to finish off the last one.
<Capn_Ascii> Ember: "FATALITY!!!"
Ember walks through the gore back to stand by the door.
<Capn_Ascii> *slosh, slosh*
Luna stands by ready to translate if needed.
<Capn_Ascii> Wow. That's a lot of salamander entrails.
Desoria takes up position near the door, bow out, in case the salamander decides to make a run for it
Marilyn takes up a position next to the salamander, dead on.
Marilyn removes the last salamander's weapon and applies manacles.
<Capn_Ascii> The salamander stirs from the motion. "Urrgh..."
<Capn_Ascii> It blinks, sits up, then goes wide-eyed at the signs of carnage around it. It begins thrashing and trying to scramble away from you, but of course, it has nowhere to go.
<Marilyn> "Hello there. I think it's time you answered a few questions, don't you?"
Rodrigo steps over the dead salamander and gets in a corner position.
<Capn_Ascii> The salamander blinks blankly at you.
Luna repeats Marilyn in Ingan.
<Capn_Ascii> The salamder just stares at you.
Rodrigo ends the Silence spell.
Marilyn stifles a sigh, glaring at Rodrigo, then repeats her question.
<Capn_Ascii> The salamander stares blankly. Then...
<Capn_Ascii> ".....AAAAAAAAUUUUUGH! YOU KILLED THEM! YOU KILLED ALL OF THEM!!!"
<Capn_Ascii> "OH, GOD! THEY'RE DEAD! THEY'RE ALL DEEEEAAAAAAD!"
Luna covers her ears "That was a late response"
<Capn_Ascii> "I SUFFER DELAYED RESPONSE TIME WHEN SUBJECTED TO OVERWHELMING STREEEEESS!"
<Marilyn> "Yes. They're dead. That's what separates you from them. For now. So I advise you start talking. Why did you put me in a cell?"
<Capn_Ascii> He seems to calm down...slightly. "W-we didn't put you anywhere! The boss put you in there! We just guard the prison level!"
Ember peeks out the door down the hallway. "Oh great. There's more."
<Marilyn> "Okay, why did the boss put me in a cell?"
<Capn_Ascii> "W-what? No, it's just us. And a couple of nagas."
<Capn_Ascii> "You're an intruder. You were caught sneaking into our base."
<Marilyn> "So you've claimed this place as your base? Without informing Castle Kiradan? That's a violation of the Federal Base Establishment Code, section 24, paragraph C. The penatly is extermination of all allied members of the base. I bet you haven't even called in appropriate health inspections! You'd better give me a complete rundown of everything you know about your base establishment, so we can move this to a section 16 violation, much less harsh."
<Capn_Ascii> The salamander snorts. "Of course we didn't tell your people. That would defeat the entire point of a surprise invasion, wouldn't it?"
Marilyn smiles. "Logical. Now, if you want to live, you will tell me how many invidiuals, of what species there are, in what areas of the base. You will also tell me everything you know about the invasion plans."
<Capn_Ascii> He shrugs. "I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, and...I don't know. We're just kept down here to guard the prison level. The Warlord doesn't tell us anything else. He doesn't let us leave - we get fed through a dumbwaiter.
<Capn_Ascii> He points at a small hatch on the wall. "The kitchens are on B16, four floors up."
<Marilyn> "Who's the warlord?"
<Capn_Ascii> "Warlord Titus. He's the boss around here - the bandit leader. He's the one planning to invade the city, and the one who found us this old dungeon to use as a base. Spruced it up right nice, too."
<Luna> "I thought we were barely underground?"
Marilyn nods a confirmation of the question.
<Capn_Ascii> The salamander blinks. "...eh? This is B20. We're twenty stories underground." He blinks again. "...how could you not know that? There's no other way down here. You would have had to come down through all twenty floors to get this far!"
Luna glances at the celing. "Not unless we tripped into a dimension door. We're just above the surface, I think."
<Capn_Ascii> "Unless...oh. Oooooh."
<Capn_Ascii> "Uh. I mean...yep. We're on the first floor. ...yep."
Marilyn puts her primary blade under the salamander's throat. "Nice try. Go on."
<Capn_Ascii> "Okay, okay. Look...you didn't hear it from me, but..." He leans in, whispering. "...they way the boss has some weird sort of powers that mess with the way things are laid out. Bends space so that parts meet up that shouldn't. Things get scrambled around like a jigsaw puzzle."
<Capn_Ascii> *they say
<Marilyn> "What type of being is your boss, exactly?"
<Capn_Ascii> "Dunno. Some biiiig guy in scary black plate armor. All I know is, he made this base of ours. Took the old, empty ruins and just sort of...reshuffled them. Added stuff, moved stuff, and boom, we've got an underground death maze Mom would be proud of."
<Capn_Ascii> "He's stockpiling supplies and troops down here until he's ready to invade the city."
Marilyn frowns. "Got any maps?"
<Capn_Ascii> He pouts. "...yeah, actually. There's a map of this floor in the floor safe."
<Capn_Ascii> He points to one corner of the room under the...half-exploded corpse of one of his former comrades.
<Marilyn> "Floor safe? Fascinating. Is it trapped?"
<Capn_Ascii> Luna, Marilyn, JuroBoza: You get the sneaking suspicion he's lying about the safe not being trapped...
Marilyn sighs. "Yeah, no, I'm not chancing it. Luna, take this position for me, keep him surrounded. I'll handle this," Marilyn walks over and carefully checks the safe for traps, clearing out debris as she goes.
<Capn_Ascii> And by 'debris' she means salamander guts.
<Capn_Ascii> Yep, there's the safe.
Luna takes Marilyn's place.
<Capn_Ascii> Marilyn: Ooh, there's a nasty explosive charge on this thing. Fortunately, it's simple enough to disarm it by cutting the red wire.
<Capn_Ascii> ...no, wait, I mean the blue wire.
<Capn_Ascii> ...well, *one* of them. *snip*
<Capn_Ascii> Okay, no explosion. We're good.
Marilyn opens the safe
<Capn_Ascii> No, she doesn't. The safe stays stubbornly locked.
Marilyn growls at it and tries again
<Capn_Ascii> The safe stubbornly resists your efforts. You could swear it was taunting you.
Marilyn takes a deep breath and goes in. This safe WILL fall!
<Capn_Ascii> ...or not.
Marilyn calms herself and takes as long as she needs to to OPEN THIS DAMN THING ALREADY!
<Capn_Ascii> Having thusly humiliated herself, Marilyn decides to try the 'brute force' approach. She spends the next ten minutes turning the dial to every possible combination known to man.
Ember almost falls asleep against the door during this time.
<JuroBoza> Juro stares at the last living salamander while Boza nods off
<Capn_Ascii> Amazingly, she manages to hit it without having to spend 47.2 years doing so. *click*
Desoria grooms her wings idly, a bored look on her face
<Marilyn> "All locks bow before me. Eventually."
Marilyn examines the contents of the safe
<Capn_Ascii> The safe contains:
<Capn_Ascii> A slightly charred map
<Capn_Ascii> ...and 1,200 gold.
<Capn_Ascii> Also, a ring.
Marilyn takes a careful look at the map and ring, stowing them in her bag. "Hey, 200 gold for each of us, nice catch."
Ember takes her share.
Luna does too
<JuroBoza> Juro accepts his share
Marilyn pockets her share.
Desoria takes hers, looking slightly less bored
<Capn_Ascii> The salamander pouts, obviously upset that he doesn't get any of the loot.
Marilyn examines the map carefully to see what exactly is on it.
<Capn_Ascii> Marilyn: It appears to be a map of this floor. You can see several areas you've already explored; there are a few more rooms and corridors you've yet to see, however.
Marilyn nods to herself. "Shame it's only this floor. One last question for you. What do you know about... The Bell?'
Ember looks at Marilyn quizzically.
Marilyn notices Ember's look. "It's the reason I'm here in the first place. Though I'm wondering if we shouldn't be getting out of here so we can rally the army to blast this place and take out this invasion force."
<Ember> "Probably would save time. But I'd bet they'd be split up to different floors as they entered."
<Capn_Ascii> "The what now?"
<Marilyn> "The reason I came to this place in the first place. *The bell*."
<Capn_Ascii> "What bell? I don't know what you're talking about."
<Capn_Ascii> Marilyn: You sense that he's telling the truth. He honestly has no idea what you're asking about. He *is* a low-level flunky...
<Marilyn> "Alright. Open to the floor: Do we let him go for this... wonderful information?"
<Luna> "Let him go where? Apparently we're twenty stories down." She looks nervously at the celing again
<Capn_Ascii> The salamander gets a worried look. "Oh, come on, lemme go! I helped you, didn't I?"
<Desoria> "Well, not very much," Desoria points out, inspecting her nails. "You didn't really know anything, did you?"
<JuroBoza> Juro shrugs. "It's less work to just let him go."
<Desoria> "I suppose that's understandable in one such as yourself, though."
Marilyn nods. "I don't recommend crossing our path again," Marilyn goes in and detaches the manacles, letting them fall to the ground to cool off a bit. "The 1200 gold is why you're being let go."
<Capn_Ascii> He shakes his wrists a bit. "Oh, sure, take my paycheck. I don't mind." He pouts. "Okay, look, I've gotta get out of here or else the boss is gonna kill me anyway. So, hey, may as well go whole hog. Lemme see that map."
<Marilyn> "You haven't seen the map?" Marilyn shrugs, and lets him take a look at it, but is careful to not let him touch it.
<Capn_Ascii> He points to a room in the north-west corner. "Those nagas I told you about? They're guarding a strongbox with some old documents in it. There's some blueprints in there for the lowermost floors of the dungeon - the same ones the boss used to plot the layout. If you get those, you'll be able to navigate this place a lot easier."
<Marilyn> "Alright. Anything else?"
<Capn_Ascii> "The boss has three lieutenants. One's a powerful warrior, another's a powerful mage, and the third is a powerful...well, actually, I never met the third one. But I assume he's powerful."
<Marilyn> "Human? Or...?" Marilyn trails off.
<Capn_Ascii> "The wizard is. The other two, not sure."
<Marilyn> "Alright. If you got anything else, now's the time."
<Capn_Ascii> "Nope, I'm dry. And still alive, so I'm going to count my blessings and GTFO, if you don't mind."
Marilyn nods and steps back, letting him free, but still watching him carefully.
<Capn_Ascii> He stands up and dusts himself off. "Well...okay, see ya!" And with that, he scurries out of the room.
<Marilyn> "Okay... looking at the situation, I think the priority has to be to stop this impending invasion. And that means getting back, and alerting Her Majesty. Can one of you lead us back the way you came, so we can get out of here?"
Ember nods, gesturing back the way they came.
<Capn_Ascii> ---END SESSION---
<Capn_Ascii> REMEMBER TO ASK ABOUT THE (ONE) RING.
