Trinsic Tales:Afterlife in the Fast Lane/Chapter 13
Chapter Thirteen: It's A Seeeecret
(06:41:01) <@Capn_Ascii> "As we join our heroes, we find them in the Study, about to kill Col. Mustard with the lead pipe. Or, failing that, to examine the place for magical auras, secret passages (passagi?) and traces of fabulous wealth."
(06:51:06) * Rika waves her wand around again. "We're lost. Help."
(06:52:48) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia and Rika poke around the study, looking for anything valuable or out of place. There doesn't seem to be much too this place, besides books and furniture...OR IS THERE?
(06:53:59) <@Capn_Ascii> In one corner of the room, behind a bookshelf, a cloth sack has been dropped on the floor. It's not as dusty as the rest of the stuff in here...
(06:54:11) * Dkort looks through the books
(06:55:00) * Eralia looks at and then into the sack
(06:59:06) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: The sack is a plain cloth sack - it's lying empty on the floor, as if someone forgot it. The only notable thing about it is the smell - it stinks of orc.
(06:59:14) <@Capn_Ascii> No offense, Dkort.
(06:59:44) <Eralia> ((But what's IN it?))
(07:00:07) <@Capn_Ascii> ...it's lying *empty* on the floor... :p
(07:00:41) <Eralia> (So that wasn't a trick. Hmmph.)
(07:00:56) * Eralia looks around for something that could have been in the sack but fell out
(07:01:45) * Rika feels stupid, holding her wand in the air, looking around.
(07:02:34) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: As you approach the corner where Eralia is, your wand reacts - the bookshelf in the wall behind her glows softly.
(07:05:23) <Eralia> "What's back there?"
(07:05:29) * Rika goes over and pokes the wall in question
(07:05:44) * Eralia tries to move the bookshelf aside, or at least the books aside.
(07:06:50) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: The books in here are mostly thick, heavy, dust-covered volumes of various trade magazines, financial records, self-help books, and the like. Presumably, somebody used this room to help manage their investments.
(07:06:57) * Rika looks on the bookshelf for a book that's less dusty than the others.
(07:13:05) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: As you're about to go searching through the books, Eralia reaches up and pushes on the shelf, trying to open it manually. She gives a single, gentle push...and every book on the shelf simultaniously avalanches down on top of her, burying her in a pile of literary defeat. Her arm is left comically sticking out of the huge pile of books.
(07:13:41) <Eralia> "****!"
(07:13:58) * Dkort resists the urge to laugh and begins digging Eralia out
(07:14:54) <Rika> ".me stands there, stunned, and begins helping as well, looking at the shelf to see if any book survived."
(07:14:57) * Rika stands there, stunned, and begins helping as well, looking at the shelf to see if any book survived.
(07:15:23) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: By sheer coincidence, Eralia's arm ends up pointing at a deer head mounted on the wall. As you look more closely, you see that the plaque it's mounted on looks a little crooked.
(07:18:53) * Rika gives up digging her comrade out, and leaves that to Dkort. she walks over to the plaque and attempts to straighten it
(07:22:13) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: You tug on the deer head...instead of turning, it comes right off. Behind it is...a wall safe!
(07:38:40) * Eralia pulls herself up out of the mass of books. "Oooh, a safe!"
(07:40:23) * Rika examines it
(07:41:22) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: It's a safe. It sits there, staring at you with its single combination dial as if it were an eye. There's also a handle, but no other markings.
(07:43:15) * Rika attempts to open the safe.
(07:44:34) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: Placing your ear to the safe, you listen carefully as you turn the dial, waiting to hear the tumblers click into place.
(07:44:47) <@Capn_Ascii> *click!* First number - 11.
(07:45:02) <@Capn_Ascii> *click!* Second number - 27.
(07:45:12) <@Capn_Ascii> *crack!* ...oops.
(07:45:34) <@Capn_Ascii> Your attempt is cut short as the safe dial unexpectedly snaps off, into your hand.
(07:46:07) * Eralia sighs.
(07:46:43) <@Capn_Ascii> Where the knob once sat is now a small hole, about an inch in diameter, through which you can see the rod the knob was attached to, and the inner workings of the safe behind it.
(07:46:57) <Eralia> "Alright, that didn't work. Stand back."
(07:47:10) * Eralia pulls out her swords.
(07:47:27) * Rika stands back.
(07:47:44) * Dkort stands back and watches
(07:48:36) * Eralia aims her FLAMING swords of DEATH and swings hard into the safe.
(07:56:07) <@Capn_Ascii> *clash!* *krannng!*
(07:59:51) <Eralia> "Bah, this isn't working." Eralia gives up and tries to force it open normally.
(08:01:37) <Dkort> "Here, let me help."
(08:01:55) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: After watching your swords do little more than bounce off the safe door, you opt for Plan B. Sticking your sword into the tiny crack between the door and the safe housing, you push with all your might in an attempt to pry it open.
(08:02:56) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: The door refuses the budge, however. You keep shoving the blade as hard as you can, but to no avail. The Dkort steps up behind you, reaches out, places his index finger gently on the blade...
(08:04:12) <@Capn_Ascii> ...and the safe door blows off as if by dynamite. Eralia sidesteps quickly as the door whizzes past, barely misses Dkort, blows by Rika's head, and punches a safe-door-shaped hole through the booksheves opposite before smashing halfway into the far wall of the study.
(08:04:55) <Eralia> "Okay then," Eralia smiles and looks inside.
(08:06:48) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: The inside of the safe is rather sparse; there are only two objects of interest inside. One is a small piece of folded paper; the other is a priceless Faberge egg, encrusted with gemstones and jewels, sparkling like gold even in the dim light of the study.
(08:07:27) <Eralia> "ooooh. I like," Eralia smiles wider, snapping the egg up immediately, then grabbing and reading the paper.
(08:10:42) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: You (gently!) take the egg. Like all Faberge eggs, this one is extremely valuable, but also extremely fragile. The egg is designed to hinge open with the right tweaking, and is full of delicate clockwork mechanisms, much like a music box; even a relatively small about of jarring could break it and ruin the collector's value.
(08:11:13) <Rika> "I'm... Very surprised that's still in one piece after all that..."
(08:13:33) * Eralia carefully places the egg in her pack then reads the paper
(08:14:22) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: The paper is a simple note, written in pencil and folded in half. It reads: "Reminders for Security Devices. The pantry stash opens with the fake knot-hole. The combination to the wall safe is 11-27-32. The floor safe key is hidden inside the bust. The diamonds and rubies are hidden in their usual places."
(08:15:04) <Eralia> "Well that wasn't very helpful. 'The Usual Places'."
(08:15:38) * Rika looks over Eralia's shoulder. "..Floor safe?"
(08:15:59) <Eralia> "Does anyone remember seeing a bust?"
(08:16:11) * Dkort looks through the book pile for one named "Usual Places"
(08:21:34) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: As Dkort digs through the pile of books, tossing them aside, you happen to spot a single volume who's title leaps out at you: "Secret Passages".
(08:21:58) * Rika grabs it.
(08:22:13) * Rika starts flipping through it
(08:27:40) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: The book is empty; all of the pages are blank! Well, almost all of them; the very last page of the book has a single word written on it:
(08:27:46) <@Capn_Ascii> "Floogledoofle."
(08:28:16) * Rika looks at the bookcase and says "Floogledoofle" at it.
(08:29:35) <@Capn_Ascii> The bookcase, against all odds, responds. "FLOOGLEDOOFLE!" Then it opens like a door, revealing a spiral stone staircase behind it. The stairs ascend upward, and out of sight...
(08:32:00) * Rika reignites the light on her wand, "Lumos", and starts up the stairs, stowing the book in her bag.
(08:33:33) * Eralia follows.
(08:33:53) * Dkort brandishes his everburning torch and tags along
(08:36:02) <@Capn_Ascii> You ascend the spiral staircase, going up about a floor or so before the stairs end at a stone wall. There's a wooden door-like panel set in the wall, with a pair of small latches on it - one up high, one down low.
(08:39:39) * Rika pokes one of the latches
(08:40:28) <@Capn_Ascii> (Which one?)
(08:42:25) <Rika> (Top one)
(08:43:11) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: You flip the top latch. A pair of small, inch-wide holes pop open at about eye level.
(08:45:37) * Rika looks through them
(08:47:36) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: You peer through the holes, and beyond, see quite a sight - it looks like a sculpture gallery. There are dozens of life-sized marble statues of various figures - human and otherwise - arranged throughout the circular room, displayed for any possible visitors to see. You can also see the far wall of the room, which has a row of paintings on it - there are dozens of them extending to the left and right, showcasing a number of r
(08:47:36) <@Capn_Ascii> but unfamiliar, people.
(08:47:50) <@Capn_Ascii> there are dozens of them extending to the left and right, showcasing a number of regal-looking, but unfamiliar, people.
(08:48:20) <Rika> "Found the bust, i think..."
(08:48:48) <@Capn_Ascii> The floor is made of tiled onyx, shining beautifully. Off to one side of the room, a small table has what looks like a buffet laid out on it - various foods, and a metal bucket.
(08:49:01) * Rika tries the bottom switch.
(08:51:24) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: *click* The panel in front of you swings open, allowing you access to the room beyond.
(08:53:19) * Rika walks in
(08:54:27) <@Capn_Ascii> You all enter the statue room; it looks more or less the same as the desc above. You do notice that the 'panel' you came out of is actually one of the wall paintings - a large portrait of an elderly woman. The holes Rika was looking through opened where her eyes would be.
(08:55:14) <@Capn_Ascii> You have just enough time to get your bearings before you hear something on the far side of the room. "Oi, what's that?"
(08:55:17) <@Capn_Ascii> ---END SESSION---
