Chapter Ten: Getting the Point

(06:53:17) * @BLusk sits in the studio audience.

(06:54:08) <Eralia> "Trinsic: Afterlife in the Fast Lane is filmed before a dead studio audience. Er, live studio audience. Or is he dead? Bah, I can't tell. SOME kind of living-or-dead studio audience."

(07:02:23) * @BLusk eats a few handfuls of popcorn.

(07:02:46) * @Capn_Ascii steals some.

(07:02:58) <@Capn_Ascii> ---BEGIN SESSIONINGSES---

(07:04:00) * Eralia looks through the accounting lists for diamond purchases

(07:11:15) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: Looking through the listings, you see two entries for the sale of plot-sized diamonds. One is listed as "Mrs. Ivana Lotzabuks" with an address in the ritzy part of town; the other is listed as having been purchased by "Drillwerkz", a mining equipment company in the industrial district.

(07:14:48) <Eralia> "Hmmm. Two possible answers to our problems. There's a rich lady with one, and there's one in a mining company. Where to first?"

(07:15:40) <Dkort> "There's no guarantee they're still there."

(07:16:13) <Eralia> "Nope, but it's worth a try. The mine's more likely to be there, people would be more likely to forget it's existence there."

(07:16:42) <Dkort> "It's worth a look."

(07:17:08) <Eralia> "Indeed. Does anyone know where this 'Drillwerkz' is?"

(07:18:29) <@Capn_Ascii> The address is right there on the invoice.

(07:18:41) <Eralia> "Does anyone know where <this address> is?"

(07:19:29) <@Capn_Ascii> I just told you, it's right there on the invoice. ;)

(07:19:57) <@Capn_Ascii> *erase previous line*

(07:27:07) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: You take a look at the paper. While you've never heard of Drillwerkz, you recognize the address as being a street in the far end of the industrial area. It's quite close to one of your favorite weapon manufacturers.

(07:30:29) <Dkort> "I think I know where it is. It's next to someplace else that might be worth looting."

(07:30:42) <Eralia> "Great. Let's go."

(07:30:46) <Eralia> "Lead the way."

(07:31:14) * Dkort follows his weapon-finding instincts

(07:31:24) * Eralia follows Dkort

(07:31:32) * Rika follows as well

(07:32:59) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort follows his nose to Fruit--I mean, in the direction the receipt indicates. You leave the commercial district and slowly make your way through the ruins of the city, doing your best to avoid drawing attention to yourselves.

(07:40:24) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia's innate snarkiness and Dkort's meatwallishness almost give them away. Fortunately, Rika knows a few tricks for staying undetected.

(07:42:18) <@Capn_Ascii> After a half-hour of tip-toeing through the streets holding up life-size cardboard drawings of bushes to hide behind, they finally reach the intersection in question. The Drillwerkz building is a rather large, factory-looking affair, with an obvious front entrance for visitors and a not-quite-as-obvious bay door farther down the wall for loading and unloading.

(07:45:08) * @BLusk ( Quit (Exit: Poof!)

(07:45:18) * Eralia heads for the bay door

(07:47:55) * Dkort takes a look at the front door

(07:48:22) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: It's a large, roll-up bay door, the sort you'd load and unload trucks through (what's a truck?). It is currently rolled down and closed.

(07:48:55) * Eralia looks for the opening mechanism

(07:49:15) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: It's a pair of surprisingly fancy-looking wrought-iron doors, with the company logo stamped on them.

(07:49:42) * Rika tries to look through a window

(07:53:30) <Dkort> "Maybe we could knock."

(07:54:09) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: While there are a few windows, all of them are up high, near the roofline of the building. They're the sort more intended to let light into the warehouse than to let anyone see through them.

(07:55:03) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: There doesn't seem to be one, at least on this side...

(07:57:24) * Eralia sighs and looks to see if the door is forcible

(08:00:40) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: In theory? Probably...if you could slip a prybar up under the edge of the door, you could lever it open. In practice? You'd need a mighty strong wall of meat to get that much leverage - that, or a gigantic prybar.

(08:01:40) * Eralia sighs again and goes to the front door.

(08:02:43) * Eralia looks to see if the front door is openable or forcable

(08:04:02) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: Again, in theory, yes. The front doors swing inwards, but unless they're barred, they could probably be smashed in.

(08:04:29) <Eralia> "Let's smash this door open and find our diamond."

(08:05:55) <Dkort> "That's my cue..."

(08:06:07) * Dkort takes a few steps back and prepares to charge

(08:06:14) <Eralia> "Go for it," Eralia gets out of the way.

(08:09:39) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort swings his arms, stomps his feet, snorts like a bull, and charges forward at full speed!

(08:10:33) <@Capn_Ascii> Unfortunately, it seems that he used up his 'awesome charge' credits at the memory bank earlier. He hits the door at somewhat less than full speed, and ends up ricocheting off and landing on his rear. The door reverberates like a gong, but doesn't otherwise budge.

(08:10:43) * Rika checks to see if the front door was locked.

(08:13:44) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: You jiggle the handle, but the knob won't turn. Thank goodness...if it *hadn't* been locked, you all would have felt mighty stupid right about now.

(08:17:06) * Rika tries to unlock the door.

(08:21:15) <@Capn_Ascii> *snickt*

(08:21:31) <Eralia> "...that was too easy," Eralia comments.

(08:21:45) <@Capn_Ascii> Wolverine unsheathes his claws and leaps away, as you get to work on the lock. It takes you a few minutes, but you manage to slip it open without much difficulty.

(08:21:56) * Eralia blinks

(08:25:39) <@Capn_Ascii> The door sloooowly creaks open...

(08:31:56) * Dkort peers in

(08:33:55) * Eralia looks in as well

(08:35:46) <@Capn_Ascii> Peeking through the doors, you can see the building's front lobby. It's a fairly small, spartan affair, the sort of place you'd expect to see in a building that doesn't see much in the way of walk-in traffic. There are a few chairs, a reception desk across the floor, and a large door to the interior of the factory behind it.

(08:36:25) * Dkort steps in

(08:40:04) * Eralia follows

(08:43:38) * Eralia searches the reception desk for notes regarding diamond-using equipment

(08:47:07) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: You give the desk a quick search, and manage to find a super-secretly concealed secret compartment, full of gold bars and bearer bonds! Unfortunately, you then bang your head on the underside of the desk while trying to stand back up, and promptly forget the compartment ever existed.

(08:48:08) * Eralia growls and tries searching again

(08:50:27) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: You pop open the drawer, and rifle through it. There's not much to be had, besides some blank stationary, a few pencils, and a chain of paper clips. However, tucked beneath the edge of the desk, next to a strange, head-shaped dent, is a small button (of the 'press it and see' sort).

(08:50:50) * Eralia presses the button, curious now

(08:51:57) <@Capn_Ascii> *deet*

(08:52:08) <@Capn_Ascii> There's an audible *click* from the door behind the desk.

(08:52:32) * Eralia , being more careful not to hit her head, looks back behind the desk

(08:52:43) <Eralia> (and gets up from under the desk)

(08:54:12) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: As you stand up and take your finger off the button, there's an audible *clack!* from the door.

(08:56:09) <Eralia> "Hmmm," Eralia returns under the desk to depress the button again. "I think a door opens behind me when I'm doing this. Anyone want to take a look?"

(08:56:32) * Dkort goes over to the door. "Try it again."

(08:57:10) * Eralia depresses the button

(08:58:44) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: You poke the button and tell it how worthless it is, and how it'll never amount to anything. It lets out a sad sigh, while the door lets out an audible *click!* (as opposed to an inaudible one, which you wouldn't be able to hear anyway).

(09:01:11) <Eralia> "Well? Go!"

(09:01:34) * Dkort goes

(09:01:41) <Dkort> Through the door, that is

(09:02:08) * Rika follows Dkort

(09:02:20) * Rika holds it open

(09:03:12) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort quickly slips through the door, followed by Rika. She holds the door open, preventing it from locking again.

(09:04:21) * Eralia doesn't dare un-depress the button, nonetheless

(09:06:19) * Rika stands there, holding the door open, ready to move quickly if it closes on her, and stares at Eralia.

(09:09:03) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: While Rika holds the door, you take a look around. The door opens into the factory floor proper; the area is huge, and scattered all around the place are crates, shelves, and most impressively, huge mining machines the likes of which you've never seen before.

(09:09:25) <Eralia> "Find something to hold the door more permanently open!"

(09:09:39) <Eralia> "Then I'll join you"

(09:10:19) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: There's something that looks like a huge suit of armor the size of a small building; another appears to be a massive jackhammer mounted in a rolling frame for portability. Against the far wall of the floor is a gigantic motorized drill, mounted on a chassis sitting atop a pair of caterpillar treads.

(09:10:36) * Rika closes the door and looks for something light that could server as a door-jam or door stop

(09:12:19) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: There's a metal lunchbox sitting on top of a filing cabinet right next to the door.

(09:14:25) * Rika grabs one opens the door, and puts it in the door.

(09:19:35) * Eralia shakes her head and joins the group, stepping over the box.

(09:21:27) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: You enter the factory floor, and see what Dkort and Rika saw earlier. Because I'm too lazy to C&P the desc from before.

(09:23:51) * Eralia looks around for anything that could have the diamond mounted to it

(09:24:44) * Dkort also takes a look

(09:27:35) * Rika looks too

(09:29:38) <@Capn_Ascii> o/~ You search and search and search and search and search the whole day through... o/~

(09:31:01) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: Walking along the walls of the factory floor, you find a diamond mounted right there on the wall!

(09:31:13) <@Capn_Ascii>, wait, it's just a square that's turned crooked. You fix it and continue on your way.

(09:31:47) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: Sitting on a work desk along one wall, you find a whole stack of diamonds!

(09:32:02) <@Capn_Ascii> And some spades, hearts, and clubs too. Looks like someone was playing solitaire during lunch.

(09:33:01) <Dkort> "Well, I found a sort of diamond..."

(09:33:13) <Eralia> "So did I..."

(09:37:31) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: While your colleagues fall victim to comically-misleading discoveries, you manage to find the *real* treasure - the power of friendship.

(09:37:37) <@Capn_Ascii>, wait, that's comically-misleading too. Actually, you find your attention drawn to the oversized drill-vehicle - right there on the tip of the drill, sparkling in the lack of light, is a honking big ass-diamond! Wait, I mean a big-ass diamond.

(09:41:07) * Rika points "Found it."

(09:42:01) * Eralia takes a look. "Now... how to get to it?"

(09:48:42) <@Capn_Ascii> The drill tank is nearly two stories tall; the drill itself is a good 10 feet above ground level. There doesn't seem to be any obvious way to reach the tip from here, short of climbing up the chassis and out onto the drill. That, or, you know, a ladder or something.

(09:52:09) <Eralia> "I think I'll have to climb that thing," Eralia noted, reaching out for a handhold to do just that.

(09:59:06) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: Like a young wizard's slave trying to climb across a treacherous mountain cliffside, you scramble up the side of the machine with relative ease. Traversing the oversized bit is trickier, but by climbing on top of the cab and carefully balancing your way across, you manage to reach the pointy end with only a few scratch marks on the soles of your boots. Not bad, for a zombie.

(10:00:05) * Eralia looks at how the diamond might be excavated from the drill bit

(10:04:24) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: The diamond is affixed to the tip of the bit, presumably to provide an extra-hard tip (hee hee!) to give the drill more punch. There's a special metal bracket holding the diamond in place, via some glue and a few small bolts.

(10:05:24) * Eralia stares at the bracket and determines that it will not withstand a good hammering. She reaches into her bag, pulls out The Hammer, and starts working.

(10:10:37) <@Capn_Ascii> With a mighty "YAAAAR!" Eralia brings the hammer down!

(10:10:41) <@Capn_Ascii> *smash!*

(10:12:57) <@Capn_Ascii> The diamond flies off the end of the drill, arcs through the air, and bounces off of Dkort's forehead before clattering to the floor.

(10:14:58) <Eralia> "I win!" Eralia crows, putting the hammer back and jumping down.

(10:15:47) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia leaps down with a grin on her face - until she lands on the diamond, which causes her foot to slip. She falls and lands on her rear.

(10:16:13) <Eralia> Eralia grimaces, picks herself up, and snatches the diamond, putting it in the bag with the others.

(10:16:32) * Eralia then holds the bag out to Dkort. "Do we have enough for all of us yet?"

(10:16:51) * Dkort takes a good, long look at the diamond

(10:17:48) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: *shine, sparkle*

(10:24:28) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: It's a real beauty, alright - it must be worth at least 9,999 gold! Aww, hell, 10,000 gold, even!

(10:25:15) <@Capn_Ascii> If you cleaned the glue off of it, that is. As is, it's onlt good for drilling, and casting revival spells.

(10:27:12) <@Capn_Ascii> The diamond that Eralia 'rescued' from the safe earlier is smaller - probably worth only about 8,000 gold. The diamond shards are difficult to value in their current state - you'd need a professional jeweler to assign a definite number value to them. Still there ought to be enough there combined with the safe diamond for a second casting.

(10:27:27) <@Capn_Ascii> With some left over.

(10:28:13) <Eralia> "Well? How much is there?"

(10:32:00) <Dkort> "Enough for two revivals."

(10:32:34) <Eralia> "Okay, good. No sense in waiting then. Revive yourself. And her."

(10:33:55) <Dkort> "Right here? I think we should find somewhere more isolated."

(10:34:12) <Eralia> "Do you think anyone's likely to intrude on us here?"

(10:35:42) <Eralia> "Revive now and the third should be easier."

(10:39:07) <Dkort> "All right. I'll start the ritual. You guys watch for any intruders."

(10:39:18) <Eralia> "Start with yourself."

(10:39:24) * Dkort holds up the diamond dramatically and begins muttering to himself

(10:39:44) * Eralia scans around for potential enemies

(10:40:01) <@Capn_Ascii> ---DRAMATIC END OF SESSION---
