Chapter Nine: Diamonds are a Ghoul's Best Friend

(06:31:56) <@Capn_Ascii> "As we join our heroes, we find them hving been beaten to the punch - someone else is already inside the jewelry store. Man, who would have thought that someone else would come up with the idea to steal stuff in the aftermath of a violent conflict?"

(06:32:17) <Eralia> "This isn't good..."

(06:34:01) <Eralia> "Okay, action plan?"

(06:34:51) <Dkort> "Take stuff, violently if necessary."

(06:35:09) <Eralia> "Fine by me. Let's go."

(06:35:14) * Eralia prepares to charge

(06:37:18) <Eralia> Grumbling about lack of leadership, Eralia decides to go ahead and lead the CHARGE!

(06:37:35) <@Capn_Ascii> Sorry, you can't - they don't take credit cards.

(06:37:48) <@Capn_Ascii> Oh, wait. THAT kind of charge.

(06:38:14) <Eralia> Yes, That Kind. As in, CHARRRRRRRRRRGE!

(06:38:50) <@Capn_Ascii> RAWR! With Eralia leading the CHAAAAARGE, our three heroes leap headfirst through the broken front windows of the store!

(06:42:51) <@Capn_Ascii> The inside of the store looks much like you would expect the inside of a ruined, looted jewelry store to look - display cases are smashed, wall paintings are torn, and a combination of glass and cheap costume jewelry is scattered across the floor.

(06:43:38) <@Capn_Ascii> Standing over one of the counters is a rather skinny fellow with oily black hair, a long nose, and a goatee. He seems startled by your sudden heroic appearance, and glances at a door in the back of the store, as if about to make a break for it.

(06:45:19) <Eralia> Eralia takes a quick glance around for any obvious large quantities of diamonds.

(06:47:51) * Rika looks around as well, keeping an eye on the other occupant

(06:48:10) * Dkort keeps both eyes on said occupant

(06:49:33) <@Capn_Ascii> The gaunt fellow's look of surprise quickly turns to a look of sheer terror, as he gets a better look at you. "What the...? Ohmygod, ZOMBIES!" He snatches up a small satchel sitting near his arm, and bolts for the back door.

(06:50:15) <Eralia> "Stop!" Eralia shouts, reacting to the movement. "We're not going to hurt you! Not unless you make us!"

(06:50:42) * Dkort charges after him

(06:50:48) <@Capn_Ascii> The man screams over his shoulder. "Oh, sure, I'll just stop right here and let you EAT MY BRAINS!"

(06:51:08) <Dkort> "Zombies don't need to eat!"

(06:51:33) <Eralia> "It's a completely racist misconception."

(06:56:40) * Eralia joins Dkort in the chase.

(06:56:56) <@Capn_Ascii> The thief dashes through the door and into the back room, followed closely by Dkort. Eralia hesitates for a moment before following.

(06:58:30) <@Capn_Ascii> "I'm not racist! I'm just aware of your kind's long and storied history of devouring the flesh of the living! Plus, you've got weapons! And that guy's big and mean-looking!" He points back at Dkort. "And she's kind of scary looking, too!" He points at Eralia.

(06:58:56) <Eralia> "We're just here to rob this place."

(06:59:06) <Dkort> "Primarily for diamonds."

(06:59:44) <Eralia> "Yep. We need diamonds to stop being zombies. Nobody *wants* this nonlife. We want our real lives back."

(07:00:52) <@Capn_Ascii> "Diamonds? Are you nuts?" He nearly stumbles over a large safe tucked against one wall as he ducks into a back hallway and out of sight. You can still hear him talking, though. "And anyway, you can't just go around robbing places without a permit! There's procedures for wartime looting, you know!"

(07:01:34) <Eralia> "That's bleepbleep," Eralia calls back. "It's illegal activity, why would you get a legal permit for it?"

(07:02:46) <Eralia> "Okay, this is pointless. Let's crack that safe," Eralia mutters to Dkort.

(07:04:31) <Eralia> "Okay, actually, you keep going. I'll deal with this safe."

(07:04:32) <@Capn_Ascii> The sound of the thief's footsteps have stopped; apparantly, he's got nowhere left to run from the hallway. "The thieves' guild issues permits for all looting, so every criminal gets a fair shot at the loot." He closes the hallway door behind him. "Anywho, if you're looking for diamonds, you're out of luck."

(07:05:49) <Eralia> Eralia stops to examine the safe.

(07:09:27) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: Despite the name, it doesn't look very safe at all. Quite the contrary, it's big and heavy and made of metal; if you dropped this on someone, it would probably hurt a lot. There's a handle and combination dial on the front, along with a small label - "Frobozz Magic Safe Company".

(07:09:33) * Dkort keeps looking for signs of the thief to continue chasing

(07:10:36) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: The thief is currently holed up behind a nearby door leading to the back hallway. The door is closed, but you can hear the thief on the other side, apparantly trying to brace it against the zombie horde (i.e. you guys).

(07:10:52) * Eralia examines the label in more detail, as well as the safe in general for anything that might be the combination

(07:11:12) * Dkort knocks on the door

(07:14:25) * Rika keeps looking in the main room, calling back to the back of the building "Why are we out of luck?"

(07:17:22) <@Capn_Ascii> The thief pipes up again as Dkort knocks on the door; he responds by pushing harder against it from the other side. "Well, we thieves know a lot about looting, you see. We've been keeping an eye on the looting situation ever since the warlord knocked down the walls."

(07:18:19) <@Capn_Ascii> "There's not a diamond to be had in this city - at least, not that we've been able to find. The city guard's been rounding up every bit of ice they can get their hands on."

(07:18:34) * Dkort begins knocking a lot harder. With his feet.

(07:20:23) <@Capn_Ascii> "Word has it that the clerics at the temple are using them to revive non-survivors of the occupation. Every citizen and business still loyal to the city has been ordered to turn over their diamonds to keep the revival spells going."

(07:23:12) * Rika, still searching calls back "Any way one can be revived by them if they beg hard enough?"

(07:26:06) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: Jackpot! Tucked beneath the underside of the safe, you find a small piece of paper with a number on it: "3".

(07:26:27) * Eralia tries using the combination "3" on the safe.

(07:30:10) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: You take a few moments to study the door...then, you give it a strategic tap with your toe near the base. The door promptly explodes off its hinges and flies inward all the way to the opposite end of the hallway - with the poor hapless thief trapped behind it. "WAAAAH--" *SLAM!*

(07:31:15) <Dkort> "Sorry, but I just can't take the chance that you're holding out on us."

(07:32:50) <@Capn_Ascii> *twitch*

(07:33:25) * Dkort carefully removes the door from the thief

(07:34:39) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: You turn the dial to the number '3', and pull the handle. Amazingly, the door opens.

(07:34:40) <@Capn_Ascii> Easiest.

(07:34:42) <@Capn_Ascii> Safe.

(07:34:45) <@Capn_Ascii> Ever.

(07:35:16) * Eralia looks inside

(07:37:35) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: You pry the door off, and toss it aside. The thief is flattened against the wall, his arms and legs humerously splayed at odd angles like an Egyptian wall carving. The pouch he was carrying has fallen to the floor nearby.

(07:38:47) <Dkort> "Oops..."

(07:39:44) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: You continue to search the display cases as the racket from the back room continues. The thief, it seems, was right - despite the amount of jewelry here, there doesn't seem to be a diamond in sight. Or, rather, an *intact* diamond. However...

(07:40:23) * Dkort checks the pouch

(07:40:28) <@Capn_Ascii> (The thief groans, just so everybody knows the DM didn't kill him."

(07:43:05) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: As you sift through a pile of costume jewelry, you manage to find one diamond that the guards didn't take. The reason: it's been smashed into several pieces, possibly by an overzealous guardsman's boot coming down too hard on it.

(07:44:25) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: The pouch is full of small gemstones that the thief stole from the counters out front - several rubies, a few saphires, and exactly seven emeralds. There's also 40 gold coins, possibly stolen from the register.

(07:45:18) * Rika looks for something to gather the broken diamond in.

(07:46:15) <@Capn_Ascii> Rika: Not a problem - there are a number of empty gem pouches and jewelry boxes scattered around the storefront. You grab one within arm's reach.

(07:47:16) * Rika scoops the diamond in the bag and pockets it, following Eralia and Dkort into the back section.

(07:48:12) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: Dramatic music plays in the back of your mind, as you sloooowly, dramatically open the safe door. Inside is a nondescript brown sack, and a stack of documents.

(07:48:24) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: Oh, and also a huge diamond.

(07:48:51) * Eralia smirks, pockets the diamond surreptiously, and examines the sack.

(07:49:49) <@Capn_Ascii> Dkort: The thief twitches, and slowly slides down off the wall, into a heap on the floor. "Ugh...did anyone get the number of that donkey cart?"

(07:50:41) * Rika gives the bag with the crushed diamond inside to Eralia so she'd have something to put the big diamond in.

(07:51:17) * Eralia nods and puts the diamond in Rika's bag.

(07:52:05) * Eralia then opens and examines the sack

(07:52:19) <Dkort> "Aww, there aren't any diamonds in this pouch. Just some various precious gems."

(07:52:33) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: Taking a peek inside the bag, you find that it's chock full of gold coins - presumably the store's profits that didn't have time to get to the banks before the warlord attacked. You count a nice, round 1,000 gold in the bag, mostly because it's more convenient than some odd number.

(07:53:22) * Eralia smiles and pockets the gold, turning her attention to the documents

(07:55:59) <@Capn_Ascii> Eralia: They look like receipts from the store's sales for the past week. Not very interesting, unless you're an accountant.

(08:04:00) * Eralia looks at diamond purchases...

(08:06:41) <@Capn_Ascii> ---END SESSION---
