Geometric Archipelago:Ignorance on Circle Island/Chapter 08
Chapter Eight: The Empty Base
<mainstreet> ---BEGIN SESSION---
<mainstreet> The roar sets you all on edge. Sanni cracks a little under the roar.
<mainstreet> A few second later, the origin of the roar, Mr. T. Rex, appears on the bank. "Ladies and gentlemen, Tyrannosaurus Rex," the tour guide intones.
Marcus winces, covering his (wet) ears. "This tour *sucks*."
<Elysia> "I'm not sure it was worth... wait! I have a question!"
<mainstreet> The T-Rex stares at you all as the boat drifts on by. "Behind Mr. Rex is the entrance to base number three. In a bit here we should be coming up... yes, lady?"
<Elysia> "You said that bases 2 and 3 were joined together, yes?"
<mainstreet> "For now, yes. So we closed the access points to 2, it's just serving as extra space for 3, basically."
<mainstreet> "Anywho, as I was saying, in a minute here base number four will be coming up, we are going to ascend a bit here..." the boat somehow defies gravity as you go *up* the waterfall on the other side... "And we'll be there in a minute."
<Capn_Marcus> "Wow, neat trick."
<Elysia> "So... how can I be assured of absolute security, should they be disjoined tomorrow because of the person not wanting them anymore and I get 2 and my friend here--" Elysia indicates Marcus "--wants 3?"
<Kanzel> "Couldn't we have done that going down?"
<mainstreet> "Yes, we could have, but it's less dramatic."
<Kanzel> "Fair enough."
<mainstreet> "And we control all the accesses to all the bases. Essentially, what we did is redirect 2's access points to open up inside 3. We'd just redirect them away again."
Elysia frowns, thinking, plotting
<mainstreet> The boat suddenly rights itself and you continue on a flat plane. "Okay, number four, with the acid pool defenses, is coming up on your right." Sure enough, you see a dark green liquid in a pool to your right, separated from the water by about ten feet of rock.
<Sanni> "So, you're saying that if you suddenly decided that whoever rented which ever unit didn't deserve to get back into their unit. You could lock them out, at your will."
<mainstreet> "We could. It ensures you can't hole up and refuse to pay us our rent properly. Now, We're going to stop here..." the boat stops as the tour guide says this. "The acid pool looks active, but as the base is not being used, we're not maintaining the acid, so it's just slime right now."
<mainstreet> The tour guide gets off the boat and walks through the slime, it reaching midway up his legs.
<Elysia> "Is it the type of acid that just burns, or is it acid that eats away at you?"
<mainstreet> "I'll eat you, when it's active. Which it isn't."
<mainstreet> "Er, I mean, it will, I won't, heheh."
Kanzel gets out of the boat and follows the Guide.
<Capn_Marcus> "How can we be sure?" Marcus dips the end of his walking stick into the fluid, just to see what happens.
<mainstreet> Marcus: Xyzzy. ((Nothing Happens.))
Elysia hops lightly onto Marcus' back. "Carry me?"
Sanni follows Kanzel out of the boat
<mainstreet> After wading through slime a bit, you find a stone staircase. The tour guide walks up it, revealing the base entrance. "Again, uncoded because it's not in use, or there'd be a door here with a code access requirement, or something, though you're generally expected to defend your base yourself."
<Capn_Marcus> Marcus slogs up behind the tour guide, his lower half covered in goo (bad thing), with Elysia hanging off his back (good thing, although he's finding it hard to carry her with his limited strength). "Don't you sell any extras, like a home defense package or something?"
Brellius tags along, trying not to get covered in slime.
Elysia hops off and kisses Marcus' cheek, looking around curiously
<mainstreet> "No, I'm afraid we don't. You know, you should submit that idea to Circle Industries Headquarters. Might make a fast buck if they like it."
<Capn_Marcus> Marcus turns bright red.
<mainstreet> "So, yeah, take a look around, all the defenses are off, obviously, as it's not in use. So see if you like it, and if you do I'll be happy to discuss business with you again back at the shop."
<Kanzel> "Okay. Thank you very much."
<Sanni> "How long do we have to look? And are we meeting you back at the shop as in you're leaving us here?"
<mainstreet> "No, as in, let me know when you're done looking and we'll head back."
<mainstreet> "If you have any questions about anything, feel free to ask."
Kanzel walks inside and looks around.
Elysia follows Kanzel, dragging Marcus with her
<mainstreet> You see a rather bare, office-like room. A few tables are scattered around the place. There are two doors (in addition to the one you came through). They lead left and right.
Kanzel opens the right door and looks inside
Marcus pries himself away from Elysia long enough to check out the left door.
Sanni follows Kanzel through the right door, looking around
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You see a hallway that gently curves left, with several doors placed along it.
Brellius takes a closer look at the tables
<mainstreet> Marcus: You see another office-like room with lots of cabinets. Another door is to the right of you.
Kanzel peeks inside the first door
Sanni slowly opens the second door
<mainstreet> Brellius: They're tables, what do you want?
<mainstreet> Kanzel, Sanni: You both open your doors and find a simple bedroom.
<Capn_Marcus> "Hmm. This place seems awfully...pedestrian, for a secret base."
<Elysia> "Where's the secret passageway?"
<mainstreet> "Left, through, you'll see a blocked-off stone wall... that's the other entrance."
Kanzel goes back in the room with Brellius.
Kanzel notices him looking at the desks, and joins him "what are you looking at?"
Sanni walks back up to the guide. "What are the accomidations here anyway?"
Brellius glances over at Kanzel. "Just the tables. Let's go find something more interesting."
<mainstreet> "Basic bedrooms for yer goons over there, you've seen 'em, we can double-bunk if you got enough goons, and three master bedrooms and offices towards the back for the base owner and his or her two lieutenants."
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You notice the tables have quite a few orifices that could be used to stash stuff in.
<Sanni> "How many basic bedrooms, and is there a kitchen area or something of the sort?"
<mainstreet> "Ten bedrooms, with two bathrooms in the middle of the corridor or so, and the galley is at the end of the bedrooms corridor, which also opens out by the officers quarters."
Kanzel tries to open the orifaces. "What's this?"
<mainstreet> The orifices open easily. "Just place to hide stuff quickly. If you need to. It also comes out quickly."
<Kanzel> "Hm.. Makes sense."
<Capn_Marcus> "That's what she said. Heh heh."
Kanzel goes off into the room Marcus went into.
<mainstreet> Kanzel sees what Marcus sees.
Kanzel tries to open the orifaces of the tables/desks in this room
<mainstreet> You open them, nothing to be found.
Marcus whispers to Kanzel when the guide's back is turned. "So, now what?"
<Sanni> "Kanzel, there's not likely to be much if anything in there. I assume you clean each base before you let any prospetive renters in."
<mainstreet> "We do. Anything left in is destroyed, no questions asked, for legal reasons."
<Elysia> "Sounds reasonable."
Kanzel whispers back to Marcus, "I have no idea. They control the passageways, so we can't get into suite 3 this way. From what I can see, we watch the outside of the mountain for their secret entrance or risk the T-Rex eating us."
<Capn_Marcus> "Hey, you guys can take a T-Rex, no problem."
<Sanni> "What all is stocked when we rent from you? Linens, food and the like?"
Kanzel whispers back "Maybe, but there might be other things behind it. I forgot to look."
<mainstreet> "Yeah, basic essentials package. Janitoral service is automated, thanks to a few nifty spells invented by Circle Industries."
<Capn_Marcus> "Ooh, automatic cleaning? How's that work?"
<mainstreet> "Proprietary info, sorry."
<Capn_Marcus> "Aww. I could use that at home."
<mainstreet> "I should note that in the event that we cannot access your base safely due to opposing forces, supplies will not be forthcoming."
Kanzel examines the left wall closely.
<mainstreet> "So be sure to eliminate your enemies and do not let them put you under siege."
<mainstreet> Kanzel: It's a wall.
<Sanni> "Hmm, I don't know if I trust y'all having active spells while we're renting." Sanni frowns, "Would make it far too easy for you to have some sort of surveillance on us."
Kanzel opens the far door and looks around.
<mainstreet> "Nope. It's all in the contract."
<Sanni> "If you're double crossing us then what does the contract really mean?"
<mainstreet> "We wouldn't do that. Our reputation is too good to risk that."
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You arrive at a L-junction, the "straight ahead" blocked by a wall of stone. Proceeding to the left, you find a trio of doors on that left, as well as a single door to the right.
<Brellius> "How could we be sure you just weren't caught?"
Kanzel peeks into one of the doors on the left
<mainstreet> "Please, if we were even suspected of betraying our customers do you think we'd have any?"
Sanni shrugs, "It's still best to be as careful as possible. Suspicion of everyone until they earn trust is best."
<Capn_Marcus> "Is there some sort of secret base renter's regulation association or something?"
Elysia frowns, not sure this is a good idea any longer
<mainstreet> "It's called 'the free market', old guy."
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You find what suspiciously appears to be a cell block.
Kanzel walks in and looks around, checking the walls.
<mainstreet> The walls seem very secure. Soundproof, even, you can see the soundproofing material.
Sanni raises an eyebrow at the guide, "Free market yes, however how findable are rentable bases like this. I mean honestly"
Kanzel goes back into the hallway and checks the next door.
<mainstreet> "I don't know."
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You find what appears to be a storeroom. All sorts of empty boxes and other containers.
Kanzel checks the walls and behind boxes.
<Sanni> "My point exactly. There's not much of a free market on this type of business. That would be why you can charge so much."
Elysia sneezes, wandering after Kanzel
<mainstreet> "Meh, it's easier then making your own in a cave."
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You find the little slat in the wall. You pull on it and it opens wide.
Elysia looks around for things that might be of note
<mainstreet> It's a secret compartment for more storage!
Kanzel pokes around in the secret compartment.
<mainstreet> There's nothing of note, it's just a secret compartment.
Elysia comes to the place where Kanzel is. "Anything good?"
Kanzel puts things back where she found them, and goes back into the hallway, checking the third door.
Kanzel mutters "Not much of note yet."
Elysia nods, looking around carefully
<Capn_Marcus> "So, what sort of price options are we looking at here?"
<mainstreet> "I told you, dude, 200 platinum per week for this thing. If you want extra benefits on top of the base itself, those can be add-ons."
<mainstreet> "Which I'll discuss with you, at the tour office."
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You find a room with a large mirror in it. The mirror has "SCRY MIRROR" written on top of it.
Elysia examines the mirror
<mainstreet> It's a mirror. You can see yourself in it. Very... mirrory.
<Elysia> "How do you use this thing?"
Kanzel shrugs "Beats me."
Kanzel tries to see if there's a backside to the mirror
<mainstreet> (Of course there is. But it's blank.)
<Kanzel> (That was just a prelude)
Kanzel examines the wall behind the mirror
<mainstreet> It's Wally, the Green Monster!
<mainstreet> Oh, wait, no, it's just a wall painted green.
Sanni sighs, looking bored.
Kanzel sighs and walks back into the hallway and opens the door opposite her.
<Sanni> "You are right you know, it's easier than trying to dig out a cave or enchant one on our own. How long have y'all been in this business?"
<mainstreet> "Sixteen years."
Elysia kicks the mirror
<mainstreet> "Hey, don't kick that mirror! It's very valuable. We'll give you the activation code when you buy."
Elysia freezes, glaring at the mirror. "Oh, shut up."
<Sanni> "How long have 2 and three been rented out together?"
<mainstreet> "I'm sorry, I'm not at liberty to discuss client information."
<Sanni> "You can't tell me how long they've been taken or are going to be taken?"
<Capn_Marcus> "Is there any chance of talking to the rentors to see if they're willing to part with some of their space?"
<Elysia> "You know, a place like this needs something awesome about it."
<mainstreet> "No, I'm sorry, it's completely confidential. If they didn't need the space they wouldn't have rented it."
Sanni shrugs, "If you're not willing to let us know when you might have more, and possibly better space how do you expect us to decide if we want to look for something else, or wait for the extra space we need?"
Elysia wanders out and into the door Kanzel's just opened...
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You see a sweeping arc corridor with five doors. All of them seem to have recessive spaces to fit guards outside these doors.
Kanzel looks in the leftmost one
<mainstreet> It appears to be... the Command Center. You see a large desk, ornately furnished, with a luxurious chair to sit in. You see two desks that look similar, but less ornate off to each side and in front a little.
Elysia looks in the rightmost one
<mainstreet> Elysia: You find a fairly fancy bedroom with its own bathroom and everything.
<Elysia> "Oooh, now this is good..."
Kanzel looks in the next door
Brellius looks around for any doors that haven't been opened yet
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You see a room *far* better furnished then the one Elysia opened. This is clearly intended to be the residence of the base commander, as it also seems to have several obvious guardposts.
Elysia goes to the next door and looks in
<mainstreet> If there is anything to be found, it would be in this room.
Kanzel raises her eyebrows slightly at the thought of needing guards while the person is sleeping, and looks in the next door
<mainstreet> Elysia: You find a similar room to the one you just opened.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You run smack into Elysia as you try to open the door she just did.
<Elysia> "Hi. Don't you think Marcus would prefer to be here if you're going to be all over me?"
Kanzel opens the remaining door
Elysia peeks in
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You've found the kitchen, yay,.
<mainstreet> It's empty, though.
Marcus pokes his head in through one of the doors. "Just call me if things get fun." He's gone again.
<mainstreet> (Well, more like a kitchen-and-cafeteria room rolled up in one, but there it is)
Kanzel closes the door and goes back into the master bedroom, looking around.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You notice something is slightly out of place under the bed. You reach down... and find a diamond-dangling earring. Apparently the last Lady Commander completely missed it when she cleaned up. This might be worth a bit.
Kanzel turns the earring ovber in her hands before pocketing it.
Elysia joins Kanzel. "What's happening?
Elysia looks around the room for anything
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You notice one of the doors in the dresser is slightly ajar. Opening it, you find a tiny vial of liquid.
<mainstreet> Elysia: You are BLIND!
<Elysia> "Kanzel. Found anything here of note?"
Kanzel hands Elysia the vial "Can you tell what this is?"
Elysia examines the vial
<Elysia> "I'm not even sure this is a liquid, truth told."
Kanzel takes it back and pockets it, "Okay, well lets get back."
Kanzel heads back where the rest of the party is.
Elysia follows, staring at Kanzel thoughtfully.
<mainstreet> You all meet back in the first room. "So, what'd you all think?" the tour guide asks.
<Capn_Marcus> "Kind of boring."
<mainstreet> "So, ready to head back now?"
Elysia undoes a couple of buttons and slinks up against the guide. "Well... I noticed some beds... do you think you could help me see if they're really comfortable?"
<Capn_Marcus> Marcus stares.
<mainstreet> The tour guide shakes his head. "Yeah, no. I'm married, girl." Elysia shrugs. "So? I'm here and I'm willing."
<mainstreet> "Yeah, well, I'm not," the tour guide comments, walking out of the room, down the steps and into the slime. "Come on, let's go." Elysia sighs. "Well, that failed horribly."
<Sanni> "Hey, I'm not done looking yet. Did any of y'all find a planing room, or staging area or anything worth getting this over a hotel?"
Sanni grabs her Charm Person wand, pointing it at the guide.
<mainstreet> The guide is Charmed.
Sanni walks up to the guide, "You will take us to base three and let us in"
<mainstreet> "Uh... you know, I'd love to do that, but I'm not gonna kill our T-Rex. Nope."
<mainstreet> "I'd probably die trying."
<Sanni> "I'll take care of the T-Rex, you just get us down there again"
<mainstreet> "Uh. No can do anyways. Trip is one-way."
<Elysia> "So how do we get back?"
<mainstreet> "Go on the tour group at sunset, I guess."
<Elysia> "What if you took us now?"
<Sanni> "May we please check out base three?"
<mainstreet> "Uh... I'd love to, and all, but uh... it doesn't work like that. You only got tour off group time because it's potential base sale."
<Elysia> "It still is!"
<Elysia> "See, when we see base 3, we'll like it so much, we'll want to hire it when it's available!"
<Sanni> "There's still a potential for a base sale, but we'd like to know what's so special about the premium base before we decide"
<Capn_Marcus> MArcus whispers to Elysia. "Offer to pay him to take the tour again."
<Elysia> "We can pay for another tour, too."
<mainstreet> "Well, the premium base isn't open, but I suppose, if you can pay for another, sure, we can talk about that after we finish this one."
<mainstreet> "Everyone in the boat!"
<Kanzel> "Thank you so much."
Sanni smiles brightly and climbs into the boat
<Brellius> "Huzzah!" Brellius hops onto the boat
<Capn_Marcus> Marcus boards said boat, hopefully sitting next to the charming (heh heh) Elysia.
Kanzel gets in as well.
Elysia looks at the slime
Elysia makes a disgusted face and wades through it to the boat, plopping on Marcus
<mainstreet> "And we're off!" the tour guide shouts, sending the boat going again.
<mainstreet> ---END SESSION---
