Chapter Six: Attack of the Thugs

<mainstreet> ---BEGIN SESSION---

<mainstreet> As our heroes find themselves looting the Captain's Quarters, our resident Druid finds an interesting paper.

<mainstreet> It reads, in large print: "Mount Cylinder Caverns -- Your Perfect Hideout for all your Secret Base Needs! Call today! 1-800-CYLINDER", then very small at the bottom, it says "Mount Cylinder Caverns Rentals -- a division of Circle Industries"

Kanzel thinks "...Where's Mount Cylinder?"

<Elysia> "I wonder if the people we're dealing with really are this stupid."

<Kanzel> "I wouldn't be surprised. Do you happen to know where this mountain is?"

Elysia looks at Kanzel

<Capn_Marcus> "Mount Cylinder? That's on the eastern end of the island, past the forest. Somewhere in there, at least."

<Elysia> "I believe the coordinates are 12,50. However you want to interpret that."

Kanzel stares. "Uhh.. So you know where it is?"

<Elysia> "Um... sure!"

Brellius pulls the map out of his pack. "I knew this would come in handy!"

Elysia thinks. "I'll take you there. But let's get everything we need off this ship first."

Kanzel looks around the room again for anything she missed.

<mainstreet> Kanzel: In the corner of the cabinet in the back, you spot an interesting looking flask.

Sanni carefully checks the room again, figuring another once over can't hurt

Kanzel goes over and picks it up, looking it over.

<mainstreet> Kanzel: You see that the flask holds a silvery-blue liquid.

Kanzel looks it over again before handing it over to marcus "What is this?"

<mainstreet> Sanni: You find nothing.

<Capn_Marcus> "Hmm, let me see." He takes the flask (albeit with surprising difficulty) and examines it.

<Capn_Marcus> "...Shield of Faith. Pretty strong, too."

<Kanzel> "Oh. Wow."

<Elysia> "What does it do, Marcus?"

<Capn_Marcus> "It...uh, shields you. I guess. It's a divine spell, not exactly my forte."

<Brellius> "Well, I don't need it. I can shield myself with my mind."

Elysia nods

<Capn_Marcus> "Well, heck, I'm keepin' it, then."

<Kanzel> "I would want it if it lasted longer."

Elysia smiles and daintily scratches her head

<Kanzel> "I want it anyway. But, regardless, let's get moving to that mountain."

<Capn_Marcus> "Well, if you want it, take it."

<Capn_Marcus> "No amount of potions are going to save these old bones in a fight."

Elysia keeps scratching her head daintily

<Kanzel> "Oh please. Like you'd ever get into close-combat without running away as fast as you can."

<Kanzel> "Anyway, let's get going, shall we?"

<Capn_Marcus> "Exactly! It's either that, or get crumpled like a soda can."

Kanzel leads the way back up to the deck of the ship.

<mainstreet> It's quiet on the deck. No one is here.

Kanzel mutters "Uh-oh.."

<Elysia> "Is this the part of the plan that isn't our plan where we get blown up?"

<Kanzel> "I think we should get off the boat. Like now."

Kanzel runs for the dock

Elysia follows, eyes on Kanzel's anatomy

Sanni joins Kanzel running as fast as she can for the dock

<Capn_Marcus> "Huh?" He catches up. "Guys, I think they're belowdecks..."

<mainstreet> *CRASH!*

<mainstreet> Marcus falls down the hole at the same instant it opens and a large man jumps up it, slamming his sword into him!

<Capn_Marcus> Marcus finds himself hovering in midair. He blinks, and looks down...he's impaled on the goon's sword, which is holding him off his feet. "...ow?" He slumps, his eyes rolling back in his head.

<Capn_Marcus> Marcus slips off the sword and falls down the hole.

Elysia leaps into action, trying to heal Marcus

<mainstreet> Another thug comes jumping up in front of Kanzel and Sanni, cutting off their escape!

Sanni grabs her daggers, falling into a fighting stance

Kanzel pulls out her swords, turns and faces the Thug that attacked Marcus "Who do you think you are?"

Elysia manages to stabilise Marcus, her heart pounding like crazy

<mainstreet> "Your death," the thug comments.

Brellius pulls his halberd out of nowhere. "That's not very nice."

<Capn_Marcus> Marcus, half-concious, gurgles something unintelligible (but vaguely insulting) at the thugs through the blood welling up in his throat.

<mainstreet> Thug 1 takes a hack at Kanzel.

Sanni puts away her daggers, casing wildshape on herself, turning into dire bear

<mainstreet> Thug 1's swing is juuuuuuuuuust a bit outside and misses.

Kanzel turns invisible, goes around behind The thug and and attacks.

<mainstreet> Kanzel SLAMS into the thug, hammering him hard. "OOF!"

Elysia gets the sole healing wand she has and hisses in Marcus's ear, "Don't you dare die on me, you hear? If you do, you'll never get to ogle my butt again, got it?" as she waves the wand to heal the lecherous old guy.

<Capn_Marcus> Marcus opens his eyes, and grins weakly. "Well, it *is* a nice butt..."

Elysia blushes

<Capn_Marcus> "Urgh. What the hell hit me?"

Brellius steps in between the other thug and everyone else, and takes a swing at him

<mainstreet> "GAH!" the thug cries, as the blade runs across his chest.

Sanni rushes at thug 2 claws out

<mainstreet> Sanni's roaring CRASH into the thug leaves him *seriously* bleeding, with bits of flesh left behind in her claws and teeth.

<mainstreet> The thug curses words not fit to repeat then takes a swipe at that huge bear in front of him.

<mainstreet> The blade *ding*s Sanni slightly, causing a slight dribble in one arm.

<Capn_Marcus> "Bleargh..." Marcus slowly climbs to his feet, clutching as his previously-gaping-but-magically-resealed-but-still-hurting-like-hell chest wound. "Grah. How do we get back up top?" He starts heading in the general direction of something resembling the stairs up.

<mainstreet> Thug One runs up, taking a hack at Sanni.

<mainstreet> As he attempts to do this, however, he drops his sword. It goes sliding across the floor, landing right at the stop of the stairwell, an easy pickup for Marcus.

Kanzel pops back into existance, before popping right back out of it again. She then turns and charges towards the thug that ran away from her.

<mainstreet> Kanzel chaaaaaaaaaarges like a wolf... and slices right into the enemy's back! "AAAAAAAAGH!"

Elysia goes over to Marcus, muttering about stubborn morons who won't let themselves be healed before trying to go kill themselves again. "Oi! If you'd PREFER dying again, let me know! Otherwise, let me heal!"

Elysia does her healing trick again.

<Capn_Marcus> Marcus looks sheepish. "Sorry, sorry! But I figured I should get into position to help the others ASAP. I just sort of assumed you could heal on the go."

Brellius focuses his mental might into his halberd, and then swings it wildly in the thug's direction

<mainstreet> The first SWING of the mighty halberd neatly cleaves the Thug Two in Two.

<Brellius> "...oops."

<mainstreet> The remaining thug growls menacingly at you all.

<Kanzel> "Want to revise your answer?"

<Elysia> "Marcus, healing you is complicated. You might have died. Do you want, when I've barely healed you, to go get even MORE messed up and be potentially out of my healing range?

<mainstreet> "Not on your life. Or death, as it may be."

<Capn_Marcus> "Well, no, I guess..."

Kanzel chuckles "Well, you're not going to survive an attack from her. you might want to answer me before that happens."

<mainstreet> Looking at the bear, the guy gets nervous. "Okay, fine, fine, I have no blade anyways. Just make it quick," he says, falling down.

<Kanzel> "Who sent you?"

<mainstreet> "I can't talk about that."

<Kanzel> "Why?"

<mainstreet> "Because I'm hurting, and am wasting breath, that's why! I surrendered, should I be getting healing?"

<mainstreet> "I think so."

<Capn_Marcus> "Hell no!"

<Kanzel> "If we heal you, would you answer our questions?"

<Capn_Marcus> Marcus picks up the errant sword, and then hobbles over. "After what you did to me? I say we run *him* through, see how *he* likes it!"

<mainstreet> "You already ran my buddy through, I've seen plenty. Heal me, or I won't talk. Hell, if you don't give me a chance to get far away from here I'm dead anyways."

<Elysia> "I'm not healing him until he gives us *one* piece of good information. Like how to make a good curry."

<Capn_Marcus> "Fine, then. Talk, if you're going to."

<mainstreet> "I have no reason to talk. Not like this."

Kanzel sighs and pulls our her wand. "How about this. One heal for each piece of useful information."

<mainstreet> "Hmmm. I think I can go for that. Heal first, though."

Elysia heals her mate Marcus, giving the thug a smug smirk

Kanzel points her wand at the Thug "Fine. Fair is fair."

<mainstreet> The thug smiles, as his bleeding stops a bit. "Thanks. So, what do you want to know?"

<Kanzel> "Who sent you?"

<mainstreet> "Ah, that... that one, is the one I can't tell. And, no, it's not because I don't want to tell you, but it's operative conditioning. She had my memory wiped. All I remember is that it is a she. And one who commands me."

<Kanzel> "Okay. Where were you when your memory was wiped?"

<mainstreet> "Here. We were dropped off here, her wizard wiped our memories and they left."

<Kanzel> "Did she mention why she wanted us dead?"

<Capn_Marcus> " are you supposed to collect your pay if you don't remember who your boss is?"

<mainstreet> "Heal me two more times, and I'll answer two more questions."

<Capn_Marcus> "Sure, if you don't mind us stabbing you a few times so the healing doesn't go to waste."

<mainstreet> "Look, I know I'm bad off, I know how much healing I need. When I'm fine, I'll tell 'ya."

Kanzel thinks "Alright, I guess that puts us at even, currently. Two half answers does count as a full one." She points the wand at him again. "Do you remember anything from before you met her? Your name? where you're from?"

<mainstreet> "That's three questions now. Which one do you want answered?"

<Kanzel> "I said one heal per useful information. Your name and where you're from are personal questions. Just trying to make conversation."

<mainstreet> "Oh, fine. The name's Jim. I'm from Septagon. My partner was Ricky."

<mainstreet> "And fine, so two questions, and one healing. Pick one."

Kanzel points the wand again. "Sorry about Ricky. And you may as well answer both."

<mainstreet> "Okay. She said she wanted you dead because you were snooping in her business, and she didn't trust your motives. Whatever that means. And I get paid at the cave."

<Kanzel> "That's only half an answer. Which cave?"

Elysia mutters, "What's so bad about *us* snooping in her business?"

<mainstreet> "*The* cave. It wasn't exactly named."

<Kanzel> "Where?"

<mainstreet> "In the mountain."

<Brellius> "Does the mountain have a name?"

<mainstreet> "It probably does, but I'm no geographer. There's only one mountain on the Island though."

<Kanzel> "did you see a woman in a bathing suit around here?"

<mainstreet> "Heheh... yeah, we scared her into taking a hike. Heheh."

<Kanzel> "Did you see where she went?"

<mainstreet> "No, because I didn't care, 'long as it was away from the boat."

<Elysia> "Well, that's convenient."

<Kanzel> "Do you think you could lead us to the Cave?"

<mainstreet> "What? Hell no! Are you kidding? I failed in my mission, I'm as good as dead! I'm hitting the high road, getting off this island, preferably out of this Archipelago, as soon as possible! Otherwise she's gonna kill me. Gotta run, no other option."

<Kanzel> "Teaming up with us would be an option. I have a question though."

Kanzel leans a little closer "How do you know where the cave is if she wiped your memory?"

<mainstreet> "It wasn't a complete wipe. Just her, personally. I know pretty much everything. Just not her."

<mainstreet> "I'm not sure I want to know, really."

<Kanzel> "That's also convenient."

<mainstreet> "I guess. I dunno."

<Capn_Marcus> "Is there anyone in on this besides her? A second in command, maybe?"

<mainstreet> "She's got a wizard or two helping her out, and I've seen a lord pop in on occasion, but... mostly it's just us thugs. Not many of us. Maybe a dozen. Well, ten now, as Ricky's dead and I ain't going back there."

<Elysia> "What does she have against us?"

<Capn_Marcus> "Can you tell us about the wizard, or the lord?"

<mainstreet> "Like I said, she said you were snooping. Are you deaf?"

<Elysia> "Not deaf, just not convinced."

<mainstreet> "Eh. They're human. Normal looking. I'm not the most brilliant observationalist."

<Elysia> "Clearly."

Elysia waits to see if her sarcasm is observed

<mainstreet> "If I was, do you think I'd do thug work?"

<Kanzel> "Do you remember when you started working for her?"

<Elysia> "Brilliant observationalist does not equal smart."

<mainstreet> "I've always worked for her. Well, ever since she took over the land I was on."

<Elysia> "When was that?"

<mainstreet> "About... 2 years ago, I think. Something like that."

<Kanzel> "Do you happen to remember if she was with a man?"

<mainstreet> "Well, that's how ladies usually take land on the Septagon, isn't it? Marriage?"

<Kanzel> "Well, yes, but do you remember anything about the man?"

<mainstreet> "Um... not really. Never dealt with him much."

<mainstreet> "Look, I've answered like 10 questions, can I PLEASE get another heal?"

Kanzel sighs, "Look, you're not even bleeding anymore. you'll get all the heals you want when we're done here."

<mainstreet> "Oh, fine, fine. But what more can you want anyways?"

<Elysia> "A recipe for a good curry and for you to remember the stuff you forgot before we let the bear on you to cleave your head off in one swipe."

<Brellius> "Curry sounds great right now...but is that really necessary?"

<mainstreet> "Oh, so I'm supposed to remember something that's been magically pulled out of my head? And I don't consume curry, so I don't know."

<Elysia> "It'd help us."

<Kanzel> "Do you know of any upcoming war between the Triangle Islnad and Hexagon island?"

<Elysia> "Kanzel, do you know how to undo his memory?"

<mainstreet> "War? Eh, not really, though it wouldn't surprise me, those two war a lot."

<Capn_Marcus> Marcus looks at the thug. "You wouldn't happen to know anything about some fake military uniforms, would you?"

<Kanzel> "Sorry, not too good with the spells. I know of some spells, but I can't cast any."

<mainstreet> "Sheesh, you're blind, old guy. I know what I'm wearing, idiot."

<Kanzel> "Do you remember how you came to get that uniform?"

<mainstreet> "Mistress gave it to me for the mission."

Elysia looks thoughtful

<Kanzel> "have you been on this boat before the mission to kill us?"

<mainstreet> "No. Some of the other guys were, though, I understand."

<Kanzel> "Any idea why?"

<Capn_Marcus> "Oh, well ex-CUUUSE me for having blood all over my eyes from where you *stabbed* me."

<Elysia> "What were you going to do after this, assuming you completed your objective here?"

<mainstreet> "No. First rule of thugdom: If it's not your mission, don't ask."

<mainstreet> "And again, I didn't ask."

<Elysia> "So..."

Elysia looks puzzled. "You were going to do what you had to here and then do bugger all?"

<mainstreet> "Well, I guess Mistress would have new orders for me at the Cave. But it's not like she'd tell me what they are."

<Capn_Marcus> "Ooh, here's one. How did you get hired in the first place? Is there some sort of thug employment agency or something?"

<Elysia> "So you were going to go back to the Cave?"

<mainstreet> "Wow, you don't listen. I've been on her land. And yes."

<Kanzel> "How much were you supposed to get paid?"

<mainstreet> "100 gold."

<mainstreet> "For the whole series of missions."

<Kanzel> "Whole series?"

Elysia grabs the thug and stares into his eyes. "Then that is what you were going to do after completing your objective. Return to the cave for the next instruction set!"

<Elysia> "Can I please kill him, Kanzel? He's annoying me."

<mainstreet> "I just didn't feel a need to repeat myself. Nor do I now. Sheesh."

Kanzel thinks.

<Kanzel> "What if you go back to the cave claiming you killed us?"

<Elysia> "Yeah, because when I'm tied up and at the mercy of people who want to kill me, my first thought is NOT to be as cooperative as possible."

<mainstreet> "If I go without Ricky, she'll know something's up."

<Kanzel> "Not if you say either he was killed in the struggle or you left him behind."

<Elysia> "Do we know disguise spells?"

<Elysia> "Yeah...

<Kanzel> "I think two of us do."

<mainstreet> "Well, you could disguise yourselves as the two of us, but I want nothing to do with it."

<Kanzel> "Does the name Baron Yoloff mean anything to you?"

<Brellius> "I don't think a disguise would work. They can selectively modify memories. Maybe they can read them, too."

<mainstreet> "Hmmmm. It feels like it should, yeah. I feel the memory wipe burning there when I think of it."

<Capn_Marcus> "What about the Baroness Eralia Khellian-Yoloff?"

<mainstreet> "Nope, nothing."

Kanzel sighs and points the wand at him again. "Let's find you a lifeboat or something. Maybe you can make it back to Septagon."

<Elysia> "Can I hope he doesn't?"

Kanzel rolls her eyes and actively looks for a life boat.

<mainstreet> "Why would I go back to Septagon? Just to get killed by the Mistress as soon as she returns? No, thanks, I'm heading around the world, if I can."

<Brellius> "Do you have the supplies for a trip like that?"

<mainstreet> "No."

<mainstreet> "Unfortunately. But I'll try anyways."

<Brellius> "I have ten days of rations, if you want them."

<mainstreet> "That'd be great!"

<Kanzel> "Maybe make a stop at the nearest island and get some more supplies."

<Kanzel> "Can you afford supplies?"

<mainstreet> "I got 20 gold, so yeah, probably."

Brellius retrieves his rations and hands them over. "Oh, and a waterskin," Brellius gets that out, too.

<mainstreet> "Thanks. So, you said something about a lifeboat?"

Kanzel points over at the side of the boat "That lifeboat looks like it works."

<Elysia> "Twenty gold ain't that much."

<mainstreet> Jim walks up and takes a look. "Yeah, that'll do." He throws the rations down into it then climbs his way down. "Thanks, everyone!"

<mainstreet> "It'll last long enough, I can always get a job for a while at a time as I move."

Elysia retrieves her money and passes over eighteen gold, all in coppers

Kanzel calls over "You're welcome! Good luck!"

<mainstreet> The boat shudders under the weight of the coppers.

<mainstreet> "Ack! Okay, uh, thanks!"

<mainstreet> "And I hope never to see you guys again!"

Elysia wanders back to Marcus and shivers

<mainstreet> Jim cuts the line and starts rowing away.

Kanzel turns to the group. "Well then. Let's go.'

<Elysia> "Go where?"

Kanzel heads back to the dock and heads down the gangplank, calling over her shoulder "To the mountain, I suppose. Unless you've got something else in mind."

<Elysia> "Food, first?"

<Capn_Marcus> Marcus notices Elysia shivering. "What's wrong?"

<Elysia> 'I mean, how do you expect Marcus to get his jollies from watching my butt if I'm half starved? And I'm cold."

Kanzel stops and turns, looking at Elysia "We just ate, like a half an hour ago."

<Elysia> "I have a interesting metabolism?"

<Capn_Marcus> Marcus grins. "Hmm. Maybe we should tell whats-her-name that we're okay?"

Kanzel rolls her eyes "you were fine yesterday." She looks at Marcus "That's a good Idea, but we don't want to run into Mr. Winters. He might be back at his tent by now."

<Capn_Marcus> "Hmm. Maybe we could send her a letter?"

<Kanzel> "Maybe give a letter to the guard, asking to pass it on to him?"

<Kanzel> "Anyone have paper?"

<Elysia> "I do not."

Brellius pulls out a sheet of paper and ink.

<Capn_Marcus> "Yep." *forks over paper and a pen and some ink*

<Kanzel> "Brellius probably has better handwriting than I do."

Sanni shrugs, waving the rest before her. Unsure if her going down the gangplank would break it.

<mainstreet> ---END SESSION---
