Chapter Fourteen: Does Crime Pay?

<mainstreet> ---BEGIN SESSION---

Kanzel sneaks into Ascii's room and closes the door behind her.

Capn_Ascii jumps...he's partly clad in his armor again, although the lower half is still missing, leaving his boxers exposed. He jumps behind the bed and tries to cover them in a panic. "What the hell!? Haven't you ever heard of KNOCKING!?"

<Capn_Ascii> "Who the hell are you?"

Kanzel's disguise pops out of existance and her hair flashes pink before returning to red. "Your worst nightmare."

<Brellius> "Sometimes I think that might be true."

<Capn_Ascii> "Sh*t! You scared the crap out of me. Why are you wearing that, I thought you were invisible?" He grumbles. "What did you *do* back there? We nearly got caught!"

<Kanzel> "I stole everything that wasn't nailed down."

<mainstreet> *rattle rattle*

Kanzel locks the door and pushes a box of greatswords in front of it "And then I went to Verpad's office and stole everything not nailed down there."

Kanzel pulls out the list of names "this ais a list of everyone in Gamma, which is a code name for greens involvement here, I assume."

<Capn_Ascii> "Based on what information?"

Kanzel pulls out the scroll and hands both to Ascii.

Capn_Ascii reads the names and the scroll, to see if there's anything Kanzel might have missed. Oh, and also to refresh himself on what they said because he doesn't have the log handy.

<Brellius> "I should memorize the lists, too. I can hyptonize myself into retaining it permanently."

Kanzel pulls out the metal box and ring "these were in a drawer. That's what they were looking for when they strip-searched you guys."

<Kanzel> "And there's this cloth on my hand I can't get off."

Kanzel tries pulling it off again

<mainstreet> After about ten minutes of vicious struggling, Kanzel finally notices the stickyness patterns and manages to get the cloth off her hand at large and fling it against the wall.

<Kanzel> "Ow."

<mainstreet> The cloth remains stuck to the wall.

Kanzel points at her bag "Oh, and I got this giant crystal ball thing, and I think there's something wrong with it. It keeps nudging my mind because I stole it."

<Brellius> "That cloth might look suspicious."

<Capn_Ascii> "It...does what now?"

<Kanzel> "I don't know how else to explain it."

<Kanzel> "But I'm afraid to take it out of my bag."

<Capn_Ascii> "Great."

<Brellius> "I'll take care of that cloth," Brellius pulls out an inkpen and uses it to scrape it off the wall

Brellius carefully and delicately tosses the cloth-y inkpen into his handy haversack

<mainstreet> The cloth enters the haversack with a... hmmm... I guess no sound at all, really.

<Kanzel> "If you think you can get something out of the ball, we can try opening my bag and pointing it at a wall. would that work?"

<Brellius> "We should do that somewhere more secluded."

<Kanzel> "Okay."

<Kanzel> "...Got a place in mind?"

<Kanzel> "Or should we just worry about this gamma squad?"

<Brellius> "Gamma squad, for now."

<Kanzel> "Where do you think we should start?"

<Capn_Ascii> "Alright." Ascii finishes putting on his armor. "I want to take a look at this crystal ball you found, but to do that we'd best not do it here, in case someone is looking for it or it's trapped."

<Capn_Ascii> "We need to go somewhere where we can be alone and not care if anyone finds the place."

<Kanzel> "Got a place in mind?"

<Capn_Ascii> "Nope. There's that storage closet we hid in before in Green territory, but I'm not about to go back there yet."

<Capn_Ascii> "Argh. Brain...hurts. Let's just take the thing out into the woods."

<Brellius> "Works for me."

<Kanzel> "Sounds good."

<Capn_Ascii> "I can lead the way. Come on." He gathers his things and readies to leave.

Kanzel pushes the box away from the door.

Brellius gathers his own stuff and prepares to tag along

Capn_Ascii takes care to lock the door behind him on the way out.

<mainstreet> ---------SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-----

<mainstreet> A short time later, the buildings of Moondale appear some distance to the southwest as the Party has found a small clearing nearby a woodland path.

<Capn_Ascii> "Alright, this seems like as good a place as any."

<Kanzel> "If you're sure."

Kanzel pulls her bag off. "Ready?"

<Brellius> "Ready."

<Capn_Ascii> "Ready."

Kanzel sets her bag on the ground and opens it towards the opposite treeline.

<mainstreet> A bag is now lying on the ground, open.

Kanzel rolls it out of the bag.

<mainstreet> The ball rolls out and starts spinning slowly.

Kanzel dives behind Ascii and Brellius.

<mainstreet> The ball eventually decides it's not going to do anything else, and just sits there.

<Brellius> "Yeah, scary."

<Kanzel> "..I think it's looking at me."

<Brellius> "It doesn't have eyes."

Capn_Ascii cautiously steps forward, and pokes at the ball with his finger.

<Kanzel> "Says you."

<mainstreet> The ball spins at Ascii's touch. Once Ascii's finger is removed, the ball calms down.

<Capn_Ascii> "She's right, it could be watching us. Gah!" He steps back. "Alright, I'm going to see what I can discern."

Capn_Ascii ponders the ball for several moments, scratching his chin and making various "Hmmm" noises.

<Capn_Ascii> Finally he turns to the others. "Okay, I think I get it. The ball is actually intelligent - at least, enough so that it has a personality. It's loyal to its master, though, and isn't going to want to talk to us. Well, not to *me*, at least - I'm not evil enough."

<Kanzel> "Well. Guess we can't use it then?"

<Capn_Ascii> "We'll have to find someone who can properly interface with it. Until then, just keep it in your bag and don't let it out."

Kanzel nods.

<Capn_Ascii> "We should go investigate this Jim fellow. Maybe we'll have better luck there."

Kanzel grabs her bag and hesitates towards the ball and hurridly shoves it into her bag.

<mainstreet> --------SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEE------------------

<mainstreet> The group finds itself firmly back in the city, just outside the Temple.

Capn_Ascii checks the documents to see if there's an address or room number listed.

<mainstreet> Ascii: The documents *you* are holding don't mention any such thing.

Kanzel hands Ascii the paper Brian 'dropped'.

<Capn_Ascii> "Oh, right. Ahem." He looks up Jim's address, and heads in that direction.

<mainstreet> You don't see anything specifically about "Jim's address", but you do notice that "Jim and John Borketh" have bought two spaces. One of those spaces is the office that Kanzel already invaded. The other, however... on a hunch, you proceed in that direction, presuming it to be the living spaces...

<mainstreet> ...and a correct presumption it is, as you see that the indicated door seems to lead to a sequence of private rooms.

<Capn_Ascii> "Ah-hah!"

<Capn_Ascii> "Kanzel, think you can snoop this time without being caught?"

<Kanzel> "This time?"

<Brellius> "I have sneaky-type elixirs if you need them."

<Kanzel> "I think I can manage. Probably."

Kanzel turns invisible. "Go hide in a corner someplace"

Capn_Ascii leads Brellius around the corner and out of sight.

<Brellius> "My specialty..." Brellius mutters.

Kanzel presses her ear against the door listening for signs of life on the other side.

<mainstreet> Kanzel: You hear nothing.

Kanzel attempts to pick the lock.

<mainstreet> *snick*

Kanzel eases open the door slightly to look inside.*

<mainstreet> You notice that there appear to me more rooms within this one. This is just a corridor... you can see three doors in the direction that you opened the outer door.

Kanzel slides inside and closes the door behind her.

<mainstreet> *snick*

Kanzel looks around more thoroughly.

<mainstreet> Kanzel: You now notice that the room is double sided. ie: There are a total of seven doors, three on the left and right sides. The wall opposite the outer door has the symbol of Hextor drawn onto it, but is otherwise apparently blank.

Kanzel checks the first door counterclockwise

<mainstreet> The door is locked. A nameplate is on the door. "STEVEN GORZ"

Kanzel checks the next one

<mainstreet> The door is locked. A nameplate is on the door. "STEVEN BLIGH"

Kanzel checks the opposite two doors.

<mainstreet> The doors are locked. Nameplates are on the doors in question: "STEVEN WILLIAMS" and "VERPAD MERSHU"

Kanzel checks the last two

<mainstreet> The door on the right has the nameplate of "JOHN BORKETH". The door on the left has the name "JIM BORKETH".

Kanzel presses her ear against John's door and listens for activity.

<mainstreet> Kanzel: You don't hear anything.

Kanzel does the same to Jim's door.

<mainstreet> Kanzel: You hear a faint buzzing coming from either the room... or the door itself.

Kanzel examines the door.

<mainstreet> Kanzel: In your efforts to examine the door, you foolishly slap the doorknob!

<mainstreet> A burst of flame erupts from the doorknob! Fortunately, you manage to avoid it, just in time.

Kanzel stands against the wall for a couple of seconds to see if the sound attracts anyone in the surrounding rooms.

<mainstreet> Sure enough, the door you tried to break in opens... a fully armored Cleric glares his way out the door. "Alright, WHO just tried to break in?" he glares, looking around.

Kanzel waits to see if someone else comes out of any of the rooms.

<mainstreet> Another cleric steps out from Door 1... actually two Clerics... one you haven't seen before, and another that looks *very* familiar... "What's going on here?" Lindsey's voice comes out, quite displeased. The large man standing next to her starts looking around as well, but not saying anything.

<mainstreet> "Someone tried to break into my room," the cleric, presumably Jim, hisses. Lindsey's eyes widen and she urgently whispers something to the man standing next to her.

<mainstreet> The man, presumably Mr. Gorz, starts muttering something.

<mainstreet> He also starts applying some sort of liquid-like substance to his eyes.

<mainstreet> He stops, and closes his eyes.

Kanzel jumps on Jim and attacks him.

<mainstreet> ---END SESSION---
