Ah'Choo is a former engineer on the Contrived Extravagance who served under the supervision of Matt, the former chief engineer. The product of being raised by a lab technician and an engineer in an unremarkable childhood on a Vulgar science ship, her goals in life are to become an expert both at using and repairing everything electronic and mechanical, and at understanding non-Vulgar life forms. The former goal is far, far more likely to be achieved than the latter.
Backstory
She spent most of her time outside her standard studies hanging around observing and helping her parents (not to mention reading their manuals) whenever allowed. This resulted in an affinity for engineering, building up some muscles hauling around spare parts, and a fascination about the strange off-worlders and lifeforms that the ship encountered.
She also received a basic training in Vulgar Martial Arts. Due to starship personnel needing to possibly defend themselves on a regular basis, they have mastered the art of satisfying their pacifistic tendencies by incapacitating an enemy without undue harm to life. They will stun the enemy, either with martial arts techniques or stunray guns, then use the Vulgar Neck Pinch to render the attacker unconscious.
She became fairly knowledgeable about technology; a lot of book knowledge and some practical knowledge. But lifeforms are another matter altogether. Sure, she spent time observing lifeforms and writing down said observations whenever possible. But, alas, data from lifeforms tends to lend itself a lot more poorly to logical analysis than technology does. For instance, for the longest time Ah'Choo was convinced that "Gesundheit" and "Bless you" were common expressions of greeting among non-Vulgar sentient races. Furthermore, thanks to the usual superior Vulgar world-view, her study of lifeforms was a bit less respectful going native, and a bit more Jane Goodall studying the chimps.
The net result is that her technological theories are a bit more reliable than her life form theories. Although somewhat useful in raw data, the latter need to be taken with several gallons of salt. Upon reaching an age to set out on her own, Ah'Choo had considered following in her parents' footsteps. She spent a stint interning in both the lab and the engine room, but decided she needed more freedom to explore her two obsessions (technology and lifeforms) than the somewhat-insular Vulgar starship environment allowed. The next time the starship visited Magmetheus for supplies, Ah'Choo disembarked - and went to find the first ship full of weird aliens in need of a freelance spanner-wielder.
Since then she's had a few temporary stints fixing parts at different vessels and establishments, from dingy bars to planetary scouting vessels. Until the fateful day she signed onto the S. S. Contrived Extravagance, having answered a Want Ad in the local Inquirer looking for engineers to "Work with top-of-the-line equipment" and "Rub elbows with the richest, most glamorous cruise clientèle in the galaxy".
